My mum and I have a 6yr old male Rottweiler who was diagnosed with hip dysplasia, high colesteral and being over weight at age 5. The vet actually recommended that he eat raw for a few months to lose weight since he couldn't do much exercise as his hips were sore. After about 1 month of eating raw, he had clearly lost weight and seemed that he was moving around a lot easier. After 3 months of eating raw it was like we had a new dog! He wasn't lethargic anymore, his hips weren't giving him ANY (yes, not any!) pain at all, his teeth were white, his coat was really shiney and both his weight and colesteral were at healthy levels. Both myself, mum and the vet were astonished at the results.
However, after 3 months of him eating raw, my mum decided that it wouldn't be necessary anymore and he could go back to eating canned food and left-overs. I tried to persuade her to keep him on a raw diet but she wouldn't listen. Sadly, over the months he got worse, he gained all the weight back on and now his hips are giving him pain again. :(
I know people are going to say "Why don't you just feed him and give him raw food?". I try, but I just get yelled at. It's like my mum is trying to kill our dog! How can I persuade her to let our dog eat raw again? It seems like it'll take for him to die before she sees that i'm right.

Boy, that's really sad! Why on earth would she see these wonderful results and then go back to feeding crap!! I'm just astonished! If his improved health, coat, and physical state wasn't enough to convince her, than I can't imagine what would quite honestly. That's so sad for that poor dog, who was probably feeling better than he had in a long time and now will go back to hurting. You could always try telling her it's a little like animal abuse or something, I don't know. She's deliberately contributing to his demise. She obviously does not really care about him. Maybe you should steal him!

What did you feed your dog while giving him raw food?

Can you give her some literature to read about benefits. Shirley's Wellness Cafe can google for that link.

My gosh....you may explain it to her like this: People get sick from many things including stress and bad food choices with lack of exercise too. For the dog, you are both like the mother of the dog so you want the best foods for this dog to eat. Raw helps and my dog has been raw for 8 years now.
You can share this note with her too and she can contact me directly.

I would also question why the dog got sick in the first place.

With such great results, especially the weight loss the dog is able to move around so much better. Are you giving him any form of glucosmine congrudent (spelling?)? It can help also from what I read. I know our neighbor dog had many surgeries for her hips and sadly she is not walking well.

I feel for the innocent dog. I'm glad you are sharing. Now perhaps you can share with your mother these notes we are giving you....maybe cut/paste parts you want her only to read.

It's the same way with humans...they get better by changing and once well go back and get sick again. For the dog, he/she doesn't have a choice.

Share with her the dog needs live nutrients and in canned or bagged food very limited if any.

Also what about barley powder in the dog's food? Has to probably mixed along the way to blend in and on dry it may need some water.

I'm all for raw!

Hope this helps. Keep us posted. Glad you are sold out to your dog! Can you sneak some raw foods into him even if it means the barley powder that my dog has been taking for years now on a daily basis usually.
