Creepy cRAWlies on my Portabella!

I love Portabellas and have always bought them from Publix super clean and wrapped tightly in plastic. Yesterday, DH came home from the farmer's market and proudly whipped out of the bag a HUGE Portabella, covered w dirt, w a few tiny winged insects that quickly ran down into the gills of the mushroom. Oh my! I can't do it, guys! How do I clean this thing, and how do I get those bugs out??? I know it's organic and all, and don't bother pointing out the protein value of the bugs, cuz it ain't happenin'! :eek: I really don't want to waste this Portabella. I know there's a good way to do this!

well if you are going to consume it right away... soak it in water... the bugs will come out (or die) and you can munch it up!

cause honestly, if you think there aren't critters in MOST of what you eat... even those *environmentally unfriendly* shrink wrapped ports... then you are fooling yourself.

Honestly, I'd return it. Portabellas are greenhouse grown as far as I know, which means that either the greenhouse is infested (that's very bad) or the critters got in there sometime after harvest (which is just as bad).
And they're not cheap... :o

Well, the deal is that I pulled it out of the fridge today, and it was slimy and instead of little winged insects, there were quite a few tiny white worms wiggling around on it so despite the protests of DH it went flying straight into the trash!! Not saving it to return it because that farmer's market is only there on weekends and by then that mushroom will 'probly GIVE BIRTH to something i can't even IMAGINE!!! So, unfortunately, despite the plastic, I'm sticking with Publix Portabellas for my wonderful marinated, dehydrated Portabellas!! :cool:

I wouldn't have eaten it either, so gross. Next time he/you goes to the farmers market you should talk to the people who sold it to you guys and see what they say. Maybe they have an excuse or will give you some free vegis to replace it. Inspect them before you leave though.
