The backyard neighbour's cat caught a bird and it's owner went running after it screaming "no! no! no! no!" and saved the bird which was able to fly away. She told her husband "I don't want it to kill birds!".
For once it would have had something raw to eat! I'm sorry if any vegans are upset by this, but cats, unlike humans, need meat in their diet.

Yeah, you are right! Cats are meant to eat meat. It's their nature.
I had to explain to my daughter when she found out that the stray cat ate the baby birds in the tree and possibly the mother bird from the looks of all the feathers on the ground. She thought that it was terrible but, this is just the way of nature. It was created to be like this. It's all for balance!

Yes, it is the natural order and cats are carnivores....I have eight. I still don't like to see them eat birds and will save them if I can...especially cardinals.:(

Yeah, currently my cat lives with my roommate's 3 cats, but as soon as she moves out, I'm going to work on transitioning my cat to a more natural diet. The food they eat right now?? All wheat and similar such items. I looked at the ingredients, and was like wait, what?
When I had dogs, out in the country, they used to kill birds and then come bring them to us, dropping them on the porch. We always used to call it them giving us a present!

Yes, cats are carnivores...i dont think anyones denying that (unless theyre really stupid)
However it is NOT "nature" for every domesticated cat in the world to be killing and eating birds. Why? Because there arent supposed to BE that many cats. It completely DESTROYS the natural order. WE domesticated and bred them, therefore WE supply the food to keep them going, they cant just take from the wild bird population day in day out, theyd be completely depleted within weeks. Some birds are now very rare too because of human activity, even those thought to be quite common
So your neighbour was right to save the birds life, if you want to think in terms of the balance of nature

Its completely wrong to let cats ravage the eco system. Cats are the single most threat to it and owners must take responsibility and not allow their cats outdoors, for that reason and for their own health.

Staying indoors is completely against health whether you're human or an animal and is sure to cause severe diseases. Lack of sunlight alone is the cause of 77% of all cancers among humans.

Oh no, Rayne, I think you've got that backwards. It's not the cats that are ravaging the ecosystem. THAT WOULD BE US HUMANS!!!!!!!!!!!! If you let all the domesticated cats loose without their canned and bagged food, they'd soon be starved to death. Unless, of course, you want to offer up your rats!:D

Riight, poison, cars, weather, other animals, other cats, terrian, reproducing more cats i.e horrible horrible deaths,is better to risk then allowing something that can be cured by basking in the window or supervised playtime outside. And furthermore most cancers can be linked to diet, and I wouldn't be convienced otherwise, lack of sun causes vitamin deficiency, not cancer, but in any case, easily rectified by windows or supervised playtime as I said. I would make a point that my rats are inside all the time, but I actually do take them outside every blue moon for playtime (photoshoots)
And you can't really claim that outside cats live longer because..they really really don't, they don't live long enough to even get cancer.
Its quite right that humans are destroyers of the ecosystem, important to note that cats are man made.
Cats kill millions in ecosystem, so much that men are actually allowed to shoot these cats on sight and can get away with it, because they are protecting the enivorment, with guns!
And if I may slip one more thing in, most of the prey cats kill they don't even eat it.
Rayne... how do you really feel about it?
Haha, sorry, I couldn't resist. Actually, this thread has expanded my viewpoint and has been interesting to read. :)

my cats never actually eat their prey, just play with it. sometimes they leave it half alive. with mice especially i don't think i would WANT them to eat it. i don't use poisons in my house but my neighbors do, and there is no way for me to know if the mice my cats are catching have been poisoned in someone else's home.
i know this is an old thread, but just my two cents.

Windows filter out 100% of "vitamin producing sun rays" so you get zero benefit if it's through a window. Most cancers can be linked to diet but sunlight deficiency is as or more important than diet. You say lack of sun causes vitamin deficiency, but what do you think causes cancer? It's largely caused by vitamin deficiencies, especially vitamin D, which comes from the sun and is known to prevent 77% of all cancers.
Most outside/wild animals live up to twice as long as those under "human care", so I'm not sure where you get that from (the same is true for humans, those who gullibly rely on doctors are lucky to make it to 75, while those who never rely on doctors can live to 120 and even sometimes more).
Cats are man made?!? Wow, I have no idea what to answer to that one, but I've never seen a woman give birth to a cat.
