Hi,

I was wondering, back in those days looong ago.... when humans first started out and had to hunt/search for their own food etc, how many miles do you think an average person would cover?

It's just got me thinking... because i want to do lots of cardio daily, ive got a treadmill too.. and im just thinking how many miles i should try and aim for daily. But it would be good to know maybe how many miles an averag e person may of covered thousands of years ago when there was no technology and we would have to search and walk/run everywhere to find our own food etc!

Does anyone have any ideas, or read anything to suggest the distances we may of covered during a day? Maybe there maybe some info about how much a wild animal like a monkey/ape etc.. how much distance they would cover, maybe this would give an idea to how much distance humans would of covered?

monkeys spend alot of time in trees, and not covering large tracks of ground.

All cultures are different according to ecology--some tribes have to go further afield to find their food. form what i've read, it is common for most hunter-gatherer peoples to only work 2-4 hours a day with one to many rest days in between. Moving camp would burn alot of calories at once, so would chasing down something in the wild. Gathering berries and mushroms etc would probably take a few hours. Miles is anyones guess.

hi, thx for the reply plucked... yeah i know we could of burned calories with exercise in other ways.... bit of a shame really.. i would of liked to of known how amny miles a human may of covered daily. Although monkeys are trademarked for swinging on trees and yes they would of got lots of strength and musclefrom doing this... i also wonder how humans would of naturally stregthed up from, as i can't imagine humans ever swinging around in trees.. but maybe im wrong!! I woould think humans exercise would be alomost all from walking and running... and spread throughout a whole dayim guessing maybe a human would cover at least 5 miles in a day, because even just a few hours over the corse of a day walking would cover this. I would love to hear anyone else who may have an opinion on this!

Also, i've heard that before one would enter a marathon, in the weeks/months preparing for it you need to cover a certain mileage a weekto set you in good stead for a marathon. I've got a feeling its 18 miles over a week. Is this correct?

But basically like i said before.. im just trying to get an idea of goals i can set for myself. At the moment im just walking 30 minutes a day, 7 days a week, which over a weekcovers 10.5 miles. I want to increase this, preferably with running, but want to set up some new goals. Any suggestions?
