Has anyone had any luck with being allowed to take raw bars/dried fruit on a flight that is overseas??
I'm flying from Tucson, AZ to Edinborough, UK next week and I NEED to have food alot (I'm hypoglycemic) and I can't eat the crap they have on flights...
How does this work?

Hey there,
Yes as there is no border to cross on the way there so to speak.
I travel to the UK montly from Canada or the states and bring large ziplocks bags of fruit and avocado same thing a fruit :) I cant sleep on a plane so I snack on yummy fruit and watch movies.
The airlines don't care at all.
The only time I find you have a problem is coming back into Canada or the states make sure you are fruit free.

...& in case there might be a problem, you could bring a note from the Dr. stating that you're hypoglycemic, & following a special diet, & MUST carry your own food! (them border authorities like notes from Dr's!)
Have a really wonderful trip!

You'd never believe all the food I've flown with! I recently brought most of my spice cabinet with me to Hungary, along with some honey, coconut oil and some other food stuff. This felt extreme, but otherwise, what? Put it in storage? Give it all away and then buy it again the next week?
I brought some raw bars, bananas some other fresh fruit in my carry on. I've brought fresh fruit on at least 5 flights, 2 of which were across the ocean. They do put it through the scanner, though. :(
Just don't bring your super expensive and not even really liquidy raw honey in your check in. They will take it away! That's dangerous stuff (even if not yet opened!!)

Keep in mind that on returning to the U.S. customs might seize some food. I was flying back from Canada last year and they took my strawberries. :( Aparently fruit is not allowed because of possible spreading of insects etc. Ironically the strawberries were originally from California.

Did you all just take it on carry-on or what?

Good call -- although I guess I was lucky slipping it in from Hungary to Amsterdam to the USA? Actually -- I ate it all on the plane so didn't make it to customs!

I did. I actually brought the food in a small shopping bag so I had it separated from my other stuff. I brought it each time in case they were not able to accommodate me on the airplane. Actually, I've only been able to get raw vegan food once!

In Canada, you go through U.S. customs in Canada and they check all your bags. I had it in my carry-on for lunch on the plane. I asked the customs officer if I could eat them right then and there, but he wouldn't let me (what I jerk, there wasn't anybody in line behind me).
