In the past, I've always had my dog on conventional flea medication, specifically Advantage. That's what I have her on right now, but it has stopped working for some reason. I hate to see my dog uncomfortable. Has anyone experienced any effective natural flea remedies?

my dog is 15 months old and has never had fleas.
he eats a raw diet mainly (mainly cause he is a scavanger and begs off of my non raw son for snips of hoagie etc...)
he eats greens fruits veggies and raw meaty bones.
i let him sleep on a zippered pillow cover filled with cedar chips.
prevention is usually easier than getting rid of the pesky fleas.
my last dog (not raw) had them all the time cause he was allergic to the conventional meds. what an ordeal to bathe the dog & kill the fleas all the time.
i have read pennyroyal oil dabbed on a cloth collar is helpful deterrent.

I heard from a source that I consider reliable that if you sprinkle salt on your carpet, it totally gets rid of fleas, although I haven't tried it personally.
I wonder if bathing with salt water would do the same thing (does her skin tend to be sensitive?). Maybe your vet will have some ideas you can try.

Hi! I have never heard of using salt, (INTERESTING!) but I have cats that were flea-ridden last summer, and what really helped was using powdered sage. I sprinkled it on the cats' fur, and on my carpeting and other soft surfaces (beds, couches, etc.) and it really was a deterrent-the fleas left or died!

I just happen to have a lot of powdered sage. I'm going to try that first to see how it works. Thanks for all your suggestions so far. More are welcome.

feed your dog some garlic and nutritional yeast... works with cats as well although they tend to not eat the garlic... so i just coat their food with nutritional yeast.

CAUTION! Garlic given EVERY day is a no no! It messes w/the pet's white blood cells. I KNOW! My Inga girl just had massive bloodwork done AND I was told to be VERY cautious of this...
I'm telling you - the oil of cedar (www.cedarcide.com) works REALLY well. I've given it to my Mom who is extremely allergic to bees, my dtr. uses it. It can be used DAILY, on furniture, carpet. I use it to deter ants on my countertop. It's non toxic. I personally love the smell of cedar. It's good, good stuff!
Have I lied to ya'll yet?

To get rid of fleas once your dog or cat has them wash your pet in either Palmolive or Dawn liquid dish detergent. It will kill the fleas instantly and won't harm your pet like the commercial shampoos or dips. I was a groomer for 15 years and couldn't bring myself to use those terrible chemicals.
Dawn is used to wash birds and animals after oil spills so don't worry about it harming your pets, it won't. Once your pet is flea free, you can use the other suggestions like cedar oil and sage to help keep the fleas away.

Dawn is still laden with chemicals. The cedar oil INSTANTLY kills the fleas, eggs, + larvae and how I do it is spray my pets until saturated, then rub them all over getting into all the hiding places. I spray some into my hands and rub their faces' inside ears, etc. The fur babes love that massage. I then spray my carpet, floors, wash my bedding, their bedding.
This is amazing stuff. NO chemicals...

thanks for the garlic info. I give Max garlic often. I've used Citronella oil on the collar of the dogs for yrs. They rarely had fleas.

Thank you for the info about the cedar oil Lucy!!
We brought a stray kitty into our garage last winter to have her kittens and the garage was infested with fleas by the time we found them all homes...we used the salt sprinkled liberally all over the floor and it did kill them all...but the cats were no longer there either.
Hey Lucy - Thanks for sharing about the cedar oil. We've been giving my dog garlic, but I had no idea it was harmful to do it every day... so we're making the switch! Just put an order in.
:)
