I like (and use) Living Harvest Hemp Protein. It comes in different flavors.. though I just use the plain, regular. Good prices on Amazon, too.

You can make your own version of Vega. Basically, it's just a mix of yellow pea powder, hemp powder and brown rice powder. iHerb.com has great prices from what I've seen. There is also another premixed brand by Lifetime called "Life's Basics Plant Protein." It's a mix of pea, rice, hemp and chia seeds. It's tasty, in my opinion. I bought mine at Sprout's grocery store, but I think iHerb.com has better prices. There is another powder by Garden of Life called "Super Seed." It's just a bunch of different sprouted beans ground into a powder. I think it's raw, but not 100% sure on that one.

You'd have to grind them up first or make a blended drink, but hemp seeds are a complete protein and taste a lot better to me than hemp powder. I also like using whole foods as opposed to supplements that have been greatly processed. I guess hemp powder is more convenient if that's really important to you. Living Harvest makes both raw hemp powder and distributes raw hemp seeds.

There's Sun Warrior (http://store.sunwarrior.com/SearchResults.asp?Search=i)(if you buy from sunfood.com, they sell it too); and Raw Power (http://www.naturalzing.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=1076).
Best,

The powders are ground whole dried beans or seeds. They're not processed according to their labels.

I prefer to use whole foods so I add 2/3 cups of walnuts which has as much protein as red meat to my smoothies (which essentially makes them milkshakes) which is about 500 calories and over 13 grams of protein. I have put on 20 lbs of muscle in just a few months getting my protein almost entirely from walnuts, in fact, I had switched to macadamias which are very low in protein and stopped putting on weight. So I recently switched back to walnuts and am now gaining weight again.

I mentioned on the other Vega thread that Life's Basics Plant Protein is not the best choice & has additives like Fructose. You can easily create something much cheaper with hemp, maca, flax, and/or chia, etc. or even nuts, like raweater mentioned. Just need to experiment with which protein(s) works best for you.

O.k. That's good then.

Why do you feel you need extra protein? The protein powder mfg's have done a great job brainwashing people into thinking they need more protein. Don't waste your money. You can get all the protein (amino acids actually) you need in fresh raw fruits, nuts, seeds and leafy greens. Hemp Hearts would be a much better option than protein powder if you feel you must supplement your protein intake.
All commercial protein powders are toxic and they most certainly are not raw!

i agree with raw eater , go straight to nature = nuts / seeds .
grind in blender your choice , walnuts / sesame seeds / etc ,
then add like ice / banana / berries / etc .
last winter i was at 2 years raw and down a little in weight
and went on a walnut / avacado / banana binge for like 3
months and i put on say 20lbs , and im a low body fat / hyper
type that didnt even put on fat while eating a rich whole cooked
vegan diet .
also , ive always worked out and over the years tried large
amounts of powders / suppliments / claimed super foods and
to me it was all a waste of money and not health enhancing .
I'LL TAKE THE RAW PLANT MATTER STRAIGHT FROM NATURE !!

dakinimind, I checked out iHerb.com for "Life Time, Life's Basics, Plant Protein"
and it has:
Omega 3 100 mg **
Omega 6 298 mg **
Omega 9 50 mg
Should not the Omega 3's be more than the Omega 6 to control bad cholesterol?
This thread is what I have been wanting!!! I've been trying to gain some weight. I'll have to try the walnuts etc.

i agree that the focus on protein intake is typically blown way out of proportion. in fact, my two-year-old anemic niece is eating meat with every meal (usually packaged sandwich slices filled with nitrates) because her doctor stressed the importance of protein to my sister-in-law. makes me very sad.
supplementing with protein powders, whether purchased or homemade, is completely dependant on your fitness goals. for those of us actively trying to build muscle (lifting weights 3 or more times/wk), i'd say supplementing protein is pretty important. of course, i believe in using raw ingredients. hemp hearts yielded no results for me in this area, btw. walnuts helped me gain weight, but i seemed to gain it uniformly due to the high fat content.
living harvest hemp protein powder (i also use manitoba) uses raw hemp protein. while it does contain organic unrefined whole cane sugar (5g/serving), this is the one area in my otherwise 100% raw journey that i let a non-raw ingredient slip in. physiologically, i know this burns off nearly instantly during a workout. since using these powders, my body has become nearly as toned as it was when i supplemented with whey. pretty cool. the benefits of hemp are amazing. these products save me time, money, and yield great results...plus they taste FANTASTIC in my green smoothies.
this is a bit long-winded, but protein has been a huge and lingering question of mine for the past two years. i am studying exercise physiology, work in the exercise industry, yet believe strongly in the principle of getting nutrition from whole foods. i finally left it up to my body to give me the answers, and the above works for me ;).
