View Full Version : What to do with canteloupe and other melon seeds?
I just had the most wonderful canteloupe and set the seeds aside. Does anyone have any ideas of what to do with them? I'm thinking maybe seed mylk, but is it harmful?
Or should I dehydrate with some sweets like I would with maybe pumpkin seeds??

I just eat them or blend them along with the meat...then there is no waste
otherwise dehydrate and snack on them!

I just got home from getting 2 honeydew melons for a recipe in my new "The Raw Gourmet" book.
It's simply to put the seeds in a blender and add just enough melon chunks for it to blend, and let it run very long (she says 4-6 minutes if you have a vitamix, more otherwise), then strain the mixture and pout this sauce over the remaining melon chunks.
I'm about to do it now.
Thanks for the ideas, guys. I can't believe everyone doesn't eat this stuff if it's ok to eat... I'm still a little scared to try, as silly as that is.
All right! I can't wait to hear how it goes!

Just because they are safe to eat doesn't mean they are tasty.

Well I'm eating my melon with melon seed sauce over them and it's really good.
It's also essential for cancer prevention to eat fruits seeds and other seeds like flaxseed, because one of the most powerful anti cancer vitamins, vitamin B17, is almost only found in seeds, here's a video called "World Without Cancer" on this subject if you want to see it for free on Google Video:

I think canteloupe seeds taste fine ... I just didn't know how to get rid of the hulls. Now I think I'll try the vitamix approach.
Watermelon seeds on the other hand. Yuck! But my pet birds love them.

I just watched a youtube video about making cantaloupe seed milk. It was just like a nut milk. Strain out the pulp. In the video they added agave syrup. It looked yummy!!

I love watermelon seeds, have eaten them as a kid....but never thought they were good for us. This is very interesting, but how do we know which seeds are safe to eat? :)

Thank you for sharing that video link Raweater. I watch all of it and am very glad I did.
I don't buy into cancer being a deficiency disease, but that is interesting that the seeds may have nutritional value that is hard to find elsewhere...
Hmmm... well, it's been raining here all morning, but the sun is beginning to come out. I plan to go to the farmer's market soon for 1-2 more canteloupes and maybe a watermelon (amongst other goodies, I'm sure), will definitely try out the sauce idea when I get back. I don't have my Vitamix, just a pretty inexpensive average blender (well, a cheapie Euro version of the magic bullet that comes with a full-sized carafe!)... soooo I think I'll probably be blending for a LONG time if it's 4-6 min. with the VM!
I'm going to look around soon for info on seeds being harmful/helpful. I just worry about which info on the internet is accurate...
shashibala -- I'm going to try to make seed milk with this in the next couple days. I'll let you know (in my opinion of course) if it's tasty or just pretty.
And Linda -- I'm curious too. Did your family ever tell you that a watermelon would grow in your belly if you ate the seeds?? I had family members tell me that when I was young so I wouldn't eat them!

It's well proven that vitamin deficiencies are a huge cause of most cancers. Even vitamin D (sunlight exposure without sunscreen) has been shown to prevent a whopping 77% of cancers, that's clear evidence that vitamin deficiencies are an enormous cause of cancer. Vitamin B17, as well as others, are also extremely powerful against cancer. This is the main reason why the raw diet prevents and cures cancer when combined with a healthy lifestyle, you get the cancer preventing vitamins which are destroyed by cooking, which additionally makes the food carcinogenic, so not only does cooked food loose it's anti cancer nutrients, it actually becomes carcinogenic with most forms of cooking.
What do you think is the cause? Do you believe the genes theory? It has been well disproven, the vitamin deficiency link alone clearly proves the gene theory wrong, and even most doctors agree that genes at most only slightly affect your risk, they almost never ever garantee cancer. Many doctors also agree that 99% of cancers can be prevented, which could not be possible if the genes theory was true. There is a clear link between diet (vitamins) and cancer, I'm surprised you don't believe this being a raw foodist.

LOL...Eva...Yes they did!! And that's why I didn't eat them either...funny, that must be a universal thing. Hey raweater didn't mention which seeds are safe, would you let me know what you find out on the net, thanks, and I'll do some research too.
raweater: It wasn't my intention to open that can of worms! To (sort of) answer your question, I think cancer is multi-faceted, and I don't believe deficiency to be THE root cause. But, if that's what you believe, that's OK. Let's agree to disagree and focus on the important stuff, like melon seeds. ;)
It was my FULL intention earlier today when I started out to the farmer's market, to get a couple canteloupes... but my eyes got so big with the local blueberries and blackberries, a watermelon, yellow tomatoes, peaches... and next thing you know I couldn't carry anything else home with me!
I did have some watermelon a little while ago, but I actually fear watermelon seeds. I've had several stomach aches after eating watermelon, which I have deduced happens when I really need a cleanout. When I am already eating ALL raw ALL the time, I have not had a belly ache. But I wonder if it actually could have been the seeds?
Maybe I'm just continuing the "watermelon will grow in my belly if I eat the seeds" thought that Linda and I and many others have heard...
Aw well. Raweater -- I don't know why I thought your recipe was with a canteloupe. Was it a honeydew melon's seeds you used earlier??
-----
OK... I still had the seeds from that lovely canteloupe set aside. I'm munching on them now! I was a little scared, and I didn't do ANYthing to doctor them up, but they're really good!!!
A mini update... I munched on ALL of the canteloupe seeds I had set aside, and they were SO good! They were mixed with a touch of the canteloupe meat and they had a nice crunch but weren't too hard.
And my stomach hasn't burst into flames or anything funny.
So, B-17, huh? Good stuff. I would usually toss it in the trash, but what a waste! Tasty + Uber healthy + sort of free. Mmmmm...

Hi Eva, I had some from a Santa Claus melon today, very similar to a canteloupe in case you haven't had one, it was my first. Also I watched a bunch of David Wolfe's stuff yesterday on you tube, and he said that the papaya seeds were good for getting rid of parasites...esp....ewwwwwww.....worms....
Well last night I tried some, not that I have any of those disgusting things, and they are very strong, almost hot with a kind of pepper taste, not at all good but I chewed them up nonetheless. I was still alive this morning, I didn't burst into flames either...now lets hope I don't grow a papaya in my belly...LOL. I took another spoonful this morning. If you don't hear from me anymore you'll know what happened!!;)

I had used honeydew melons, and finally I wasn't able to finish it. My body needs rich foods to run on, with fruits/veggies only meals like this the water fills me up before I get enough calories in.
Just yesterday I made a 600 calorie gaspacho soup which was huge. I was only able to eat 400 calories of it, and that over a course of like 2 hours. I can consume 1000 calories in 5 minutes with a milkshake.
That's why anything I eat also has nuts and/or seeds, the fruits/veggies for vitamins/nutrition, and the nuts for the calories/fat.
I was just visiting with relatives for the last few days and had lots of lovely melons. I ate ALL the seeds when I had canteloupe... and.. finally I braved it and ate the watermelon seeds.
They were actually pretty tasty! And I felt full but not bloated after the watermelon. I think I got a lot more calories and fill up from the same food! And it doesn't feel like a watermelon is growing in my stomach right now!!!
I haven't seen any honeydew melons around here. I'm not sure where those grow... Maybe they don't grow here?? I don't really get any of the exotic fruits these days. But I'm planning to try the recipe raweater was talking about with canteloupe tomorrow. :)

You know I remmeber as a kid eating watermelon seeds in Thailand. Sundried and sold in little red envelopes...it was a treat. You' d crack em with your teeth and eat the centers like a sunflower seed. But this was back when watermelons HAD seeds. Remember when they were big and black? Now even organic have very few and they're lighter...
As for cancer I think different cancers are caused by different things and exposures as well as deficiency (which just means the body doesn't have what it needs to fight the baddie cells, that we all have, anymore). I'm sure being exposed to rocket fuel fumes everyday is doing wonders for my chances!
That is so interesting that the seeds would be sold and were like treats!!!

...if you don't want to eat them, you could do what I do...
....lay them on a plate covered in paper towels (or just a towel) & ocver awhile to absorb the moisture, then leave on the plate to dry, then store in a jar for next year's garden!
(I think it's important to store organic seeds...)
When my sister was little, we had her TOTALLY convinced that our mom's tummy was growing cuz she accidentally ate watermelon seeds! She expected her to come home from the hospital with a baby watermelon, not a sister! Lol!

I just made melon seed milk! It is by far the yummiest I have ever tasted!!! You don't have to add any sweetners or anything! I think I might have to make sure that I always have some on hand for milks!!
