View Full Version : BLOOD EXAM- on the phone with the nurse!

I know some people posted their results when getting tested and such, I hope it's OK there'll be one more topic like that!

I got results of my blood test back... and today i called the nurse to get the full explanation of what they mean (i have to do this for work)

i'm jumping here! My LDL
("bad" cholesterol) was SO low that the computer didn't even show a
number. It just said N/A... My triglycerite (spelling?) was also
unbelievably low. It should be under 150 and it's <45!!! wwoooohoooo

The nurse however got a bit on my nerves.. but i didn't feel like
arguing or proving my point. All in all, she basically almost
FORCEFULLY recommended me to eat 3 servings of dairy a day, bread (for FIBER as she says, what the
hell lady, i tell you i eat fruits&vegetables like a gorilla, WHAT fiber
do i so terribly need from acidic grains that i can't get from those??)

AND ........ listen to this........ she asks how many glasses of water i
drink (i'm starting to really dislike this whole "servings" idea..I DON"T
COUNT! because i get plenty!!) so she says if i don't like the taste of
water... she recommends to put Crystal light in it!!!!!!!
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!! No wonder the most "progressive" nations are dying out!!!!!!!!!!!!)

also, my blood pressure is unbelievably low (in a good way!) and
yet i wrote down that i eat a lot of salt (which i do- but only
unrefined sea salt!) and the nurse told me to minimize that... well ok
now... is this ridiculous of what? Do i look like i have high blood
pressure? It's as if my results show ONE picture but she keeps telling
me things based on her EXPECTATION of what my condition would be
(according to the answers i gave to various health questions- such as i
don't eat dairy etc)! AVOIDING my results!! It's like i'm talking to a robot.

Seriously: i say i eat tons of fruit&veg for fiber... NO eat BREAD; i say i eat tons of greens for calcium.. NO 3 servings of dairy are RECOMMENDED... i have 79.0 hydration (desired is between 5o and 70!) she keeps asking me how many glasses of water i drink and that i should add crystal LIGHT to
it.................

That has been a good experience... to keep my health only in MY hands. It's sad that THIS is the health education many people in the medical industry have :/

Yes, it's part of the reason I dropped out of nursing school, lol.

Congrats on your awesome stats by the way!

Congrats on your awesome stats by the way!

really? tell me, did you go back to school to study something else? i'm looking into grad school and WISH WISH WISH it could be something related to halth and raw... but i have no idea if there's anything out there that's NOT conventional medicine :/

and thank you :D i'm so happy too because now every time someone tells me OMG YOU EAT AVOCADOS EVERY DAY!? you'll get high cholesterol!! and i'll have official blood results to disprove it muahahha!!

YIKES! sounds like that nurse is just parroting the same "canned" recs that are in the mainstream medical world. One FAB reason, unless you need a definite diagnosis of something, or an emergency situation, really need that surgery(it's surprising how often one doesn't) or injury, to stay out of it if at all possible, which is pretty much what I've done myself. I'm in the age group where they try to scare you to DEATH with all the tests that you're supposed to have too(I'm 61) - no thanks! This is the kind of info, etc. that gets people stuck to flypaper, and unhealthy to boot! Riiiya, it sounds like you're doing fabulous on your eating pattern - those people know nothing about raw other than the teeny little droplet of "eat more fresh fruits and vegetables" - they just don't know how much, to what extent and what it can actually do! Here, and on other raw food message boards we hear stories all the time about people turning big situations around too.
Can't believe she told you to eat dairy and bread, as well as the junk Crystal Light recommendation, when it is clear from your blood results you're doing way better than most of the people they see.

i agree with it all

Seriously, if somewhere in the answers i listed that i eat SPOONS of coconut butter almost every other day.. which is like.. let me see 1 spoon is 60% recommended saturated fat? lol I bet she'd keep telling me to stay away from it DESPITE my non-existant LDL!!!!!!!!! :D

People like that just make me want to roll my eyes! My stepkids had to go in for an annual physical last year, and the lady made a stink about calcium coming from dairy too. I had to remind the kids in the car on the way home that, again, these people don't know everything and sometimes they're getting the wrong information, etc...

It's sort of strange having to explain to kids that the doctors and nurses aren't usually the places we want to/should find out about healthy practices. What a strange world!

I'm just wondering........has anyone NOT taken yearly mammograms anymore due to their raw diet and good health? I have read there is a danger in having them done although this is not discussed in the mainstream. I would like to hear others (past 40) with thoughts on this.

Isn't it crazy!?! I was having dinner with a friend, who after seeing I had lost 63 pounds, that I wasn't fatigued anymore...clear skin...the list is endless...suggested I try adding back in cooked foods so I could make other people more comfortable around me. I was stupid enough to actually follow this advice and found that after packing back on 30 pounds (told not to pay attention to the weight, but gaining control of my hunger:confused: ) and needing afternoon naps again...having to go on birth control to help regulate my now crazy cycle. Aghhhhhh! What did I do!????

I've been off the pill...eating 100% raw again for, well, this is day number 5. My period came like clock work (no pain). I've already lost 7 pounds and I haven't napped in two days.

I don't care what anyone says...doctor or otherwise...I have lived in this body for 36 years now and no one can tell me what my body has been screaming to the world: RAW WORKS!

I'm willing to take into account that not everyone's body is just like mine and they may not feel or respond to raw the way I do...but I do...and that's good enough for me.

So glad your blood work came back so good! That's awesome. :D Raw Rawks Ya'll!

i'm not over 40.. i don't know about mammograms.. :o

but since she kept telling me that i'm at risk of osteoporosis in the future (due to the LACK OF DAIRY uuuhuuhh.. this makes me want to drop a tear!) i asked whether i can take some exam to determine if my bones are fine or i have sufficient amount of calcium..well for bone mass. they want to put radiation on my FOOT! isn't there any other way? i really don't want to mess around with radiation. they always say those are safe amounts.. but then i hear that it's best to avoid such tests with radiation at all costs hmm

Congrats congrats CONGRATS on your results. This is great to hear, very very good news. I recently check my blood pressure and it was the lowest I ever seem for myself. Thanks to raw... We have to be in control of our health, otherwise we'll be visiting the hospital on a regular basis, paying unnecessary medical bills.

Yay. I needed a good laugh. Our world is falling apart because of stupid people. I forget to laugh at them sometimes instead of being so angry with them.

Stupid "Dairy Opportunity" ads discust me because people actually think it's a great idea. DUH. Like it's the ONLY place to get calcium.

Doctors and nurses are paid by pharmacutical and food corporations to push products. They go to seminars funded by these companies to learn about "health"

I sometimes just say I am allergic and I get a really bad reaction so I cannot eat those things. Which is true..I will get a headache and feel like crap days later.

Good thread. Thanks for posting! :)

There's a thread going on this subject in "other health".

It sort of sounds like you had high blood pressure while talking to the nurse.

In a logical world, the nurse would be asking YOU how you managed to get such good blood work.

LOL :D Not really, actually.. that's what i was THINKING but not with negative hateful thoughts.. that's what surprised me actually, instead of being absolutely pissed, i let her talk, tried to put my 2 cents in at times and was smiling the whole time in disbelieve to what bs i was listening to LOL Maybe raw made me more calm hehehe

she WAS actually really impressed by the cholesterol indicators but never really made a big deal out of it.. i don't think that's so common- i keep hearing people my age (early 20s) already having cholesterol problems.. oh my:rolleyes:

Why all the news article lately about low cholesterol being BAD? That we need SOME cholesterol levels to be healthy ? Anyone know?

well the HDL (good cholesterol) should be more than 50 (i think) because we do need it. It's the LDL and some other stuff they count - and call it NON-HDL that's bad and should be lower (under 100 i think)?

So for example, my HDL was 84 which is "reeeeally good" she said :)

Aack! I can't believe that friend of your said that you should add more cooked food "so other people would feel more comfortable"! Some friend! It's other people's problem if they can't handle your healthy eating habits! But people do get all defensive about their eating when faced with someone who IS on a truly healthy path and showing it visibly too. It reminds them of what they're NOT doing themselves.
Hats off for realizing what is good for you, and hopping back onto the raw train!

Ruth Heidrich who is around 99% raw, had the bone density tests done, she's the iron man winner, etc, Dr, author. I think she has a video over at organicathlete.com ....anyways, her first bone density test was ok, but I think close to not good. Then she got it done again years later, after running umpteen million marathons and stuff and it was Higher! Really high! And she had been vegan for a looong time. And now I don't know how long she's been raw, I seem to remember 5-6 years now. Revvell did an interview with her too.

Anyways, she was set to get a psych doctorate I believe, but then changed course, now she's a doctor in something involving nutrition. And she's raw...she has a website, you could check out what path she followed educationally easy enough. Very Inspiring woman!!

As for me, I am doing a BA from home right now. My short list to follow are either social worker or speech-language pathologist.....so none really having direct relations to health, diet stuff....but I guess I could just gently point in that direction where relevant. I don't want any career having to do with mainstream dietary recommendations because I don't Feel like taking on the entire machine from the inside out. That's just me though...

I agree, western medicine is top of the line when it comes to things like injuries, surgeries, etc. But the buck pretty much stops there...to a large degree.

Whenever people give me a hard time about calcium I just point to Asian culture. They don't eat dairy and they don't have osteo problems....and that's also common knowledge....just doesn't seem to register as easily on people bombarded by the dairy industry ads and education in schools.

The whole calcium issue is so crazy! If we didn't eat such massive amounts of protein (meat and dairy) we wouldn't need much calcium. Bananna hit the nail on the head! I always recommend The China Study book to people who are buying into the dairy scam.
Congratulations Riiiya!

And Zella Juice:

I sometimes just say I am allergic and I get a really bad reaction so I cannot eat those things. Which is true..I will get a headache and feel like crap days later.

That is a good idea. I'm going to try that! In my opinion, feeling less than ideal qualifies as being allergic!!!

I often tell people I am on a strick doctor directed program/diet.

He told me to lose weight and get my cholesterol at a better level. They don't need to know the details (like he never recommended specifically a RAW diet!)

Typically when people realize it is health related they will back off. If I just am doing it on my own all I get is into a big arguement with them trying to convice me to eat whatever it is they want me to eat  !!!!

That's true.. once you mention a doctor, not many dare to argue. Half of the time, when the people inquiring about your lifestyle are not family or close friends, i'd even not bother to "fight over it" and/or "defending your position"

if the results are OK, why is she worried? that is odd!! Doctor's probe, mayube she was curious for herself.

BTW what is a typical day of eating for you? I am curious?!?

I think it's more of a case of her travelling on autopilot...I would either ignore the advice or say something that snaps her into forceful consideration so you can have a real conversation.

AUTOPILOT! a great way to put it, Bananna!!!

rusmiley99, Actually i notice myself eating loooooooots of avocados these days... i try to cut down on sweet fruit (following some of Cousin's advices because they always make me feel bloated) and i try to eat enough greens... also, i love strong tastes- onions, garlic (so onions and avocados lower bad cholesterol right? i guess that explains my results)

Overall, i think i should eat less because i still can't release the weight i gained back during my cooked holidays back in january... but i think the key is to start some good old exercising!! i'm doing yoga every day in a class but perhaps that's not enough..
