Okay, so most "raw" almonds aren't raw anymore, but does anyone out there still use them?

Yup....you can still get raw almonds...it just isn't as easy as it was~
For one...Alissa sells them in her online store...from Spain and truly raw.
Gotta have that almond mylk~:D

I'm sorry if this is a little OT, but if a store has almonds listed as raw, they have to be really raw, right? I'm assuming they can't just go put fake labels on things... but is there a way to actually see or tell if they're raw?

Lol...no, the stores are lying!! :)
For real. They are. They consider "raw" to mean that when they pasteurize they aren't using toxic chemicals that they once were. But they are still pasteurized b/c it's now illegal for grocery stores to sell non-pasteurized almonds to us.
So...any product with almonds at your HFS that's labeled raw is really not.
I buy mine online for this very reason.

From my understanding, in the United States, Almonds that are listed raw in a store are all pasturized to some extent.

*shakes fist in the HFS's direction*

Glad to know before I bought a bunch! Guess I'll have to order them online too. And is it JUST almonds I have to worry about buying online, or all nuts??

Almonds and cashews both aren't really raw as advertised in stores. :(

I heard they steam cook Brazil nuts to get the shell off.

Hmm...interesting...could be. Definitely could be. For all I know all our food is no longer really truly raw anymore with all those rumors of zapping fruits and veggies.

You can buy raw almonds from Spain as in Alissa's store or you can buy them directly from a few growers who can sell them unpasturized directly to the consumer.

This is what I do...I buy in bulk and sprout them to maximize the quantity...in fact, I'm getting ready to sprout some more now...

How do we know the ones from Spain are truly raw? I don't trust it.

Trader Joe's has them from Spain and they irradiate all of their incoming foods. I know because I asked an employee.

I agree, Zuri, I don't trust that.

I can't compromise by buying non-raw almonds. My body knows the difference between SAD and RAW. Sometimes, regretfully.

Hmmm.... guess I'll just have to keep doing what I'm doing. :) I can't afford to buy nuts online right now, and I am still healthier than ever before even with a few things in my diet being non-raw raw.

*sigh*

It's getting harder and harder just to live the way I WANT to live, with the way the government/FDA/etc. are wrapping their hands around everything food-related now...

I don't get how more people don't understand what's happening... everyone around me seems so blind, down here, about why this is going on. :(

I've never bought them from Spain.....agree about the not being able to trust that food is safe though..I buy from the grower.....I figure that's about as safe as I can get...and also still be able to afford to buy them (barely)...I buy in bulk too acjazz...and do the same as you~

I do use a lot less than I did before the pasturization went tinto effect.
