I've been really getting into green smoothies, trying different combinations and consuming them just about daily. I was wondering if you tend to stick with fruits and greens, or do you add other things such as hemp protein, nuts, flax, etc?
At first I was putting protein powders but lately I've kind of like the idea of keeping it simple and sticking to fruits and greens.
Anyways, just wondering :)

The fun thing about green smoothies is that you can do anythng you want to. I usually add some kelp or dulse, some flax seed oil or coconut oil, maybe some spirulina or hemp protein. I don't think the hemp protein reallyg gets me anything, but I throw some in to use it up now that I have it, and usually on long bike ride days.
Doing them simple is fine, too. I'ts all good!

I just got some spirulina and I can't believe how much I love the taste. It makes the green smoothies super dark as well. I never add oils to mine because I have mine during the day and oils make me kind of sleepy. I use fruit, greens, and a little dulse and stevia. And now spirulina.

In the beginning I added 2 T of hemp protein powder and 1 T of ground-up flax seeds, which was excellent(I need these extra because I work out)and now I'm on 1.5 T of the hemp, and 1.5 T of chia seeds. This latter combo for me really powers up my smoothies into a very filling and at the same time cleansing drink. Sometimes it is so filling that I save the other half for part of another meal!
As far as what fruits, basically about two of whatever I have fresh lying around that day, along with a mix of spinach and parsley, sometimes kale is in the mix if I have it.

Do you soak the chia seeds into a gel first? I read that you have to take in a lot of liquid to absorb them.

Since my green smoothie is pretty liquidy, the chia seeds already have something to soak in. Usually I drink my smoothie slowly, stretching it out over an hour, or more, sometimes even leaving half for later. This way, the seeds have a chance to soak some too. Another benefit of drinking the smoothie slowly instead of chugging it all down is that this pace definitely gives your brain a chance to register that you're full and guards against over-eating. Plus I drink plenty of water anyway.

The only one of those that I use is hemp protein, but I am able to get that at the health food stores around here. I think it was about 15.00$ for a bag, I can't remember the weight though.

Blazin' Jane - what does the Kelp/Dulce flakes do to the taste/nutrients?
