Because of estrogen and gluten issues I have to avoid soy. There is just too much sodium in Nama Shoyu for me. I always become VERY bloated and have pain for days after eating anything with it. I also read an article that stated MSG is often listed using other words that people aren't familar with. Sorta hidden and not clearly stated as MSG. They mentioned that this is usually a problem with soy sauce. So I've been using the following recipe as a Nama Shoyu sub. It does contain molasses and I know some have a problem with using it. I find leaving the molasses out doesn't give it the same flavor. For me the small amount 1 teaspoon was needed.

This recipe is wheat, gluten, soy and MSG free.
Soy Sauce Substitute
(animal product removed for obvious reasons)
2 teaspoons cider vinegar (or lemon/lime juice)
1 teaspoon molasses
1/8 teaspoon ground ginger
1 dash black pepper
1 dash garlic powder
1 dash onion powder

That sounds veeeeeeery tasty. I can't use Shoyu either because there is wheat in it...your alternative sounds so good! I'll probably use dark agave though cuz I have oodles.

Our HFS doesn't sell the dark Agave. I wish they would, I'd be willing to sub it in the recipe and see if it alters the taste. There is something about the molasses that just gives it the flavor I find it needs. When I left it out I noticed a difference. A friend of mine sent this recipe to me. They use low sodium beef broth in their recipe for added flavor.
