You think there would be a warning or something at the store. I just juiced a whole taro root and then i go to see how good this is for me and find out its toxic if eaten raw. What should I do?

Do call poison control just to be safe, it is poisonous because of calcium oxalate.

http://www.smso.net/Taro
In its raw form the plant is toxic due to the presence of calcium oxalate,[2][3] although the toxin is destroyed by cooking[4] or can be removed by steeping taro roots in cold water overnight.

http://www.smso.net/Calcium_oxalate#Effects_of_ingestion
Effects of ingestion
Even a small dose of calcium oxalate is enough to cause intense sensations of burning in the mouth and throat, swelling, and choking. In larger doses, however, calcium oxalate causes severe digestive upset, breathing difficulties and — if enough is consumed — convulsions, coma and death. Recovery from severe oxalate poisoning is possible, but permanent liver and kidney damage may have occurred.

i think... and i could be wrong... that your body will sort it out. if it needs to come up, your body will take care of that. you could always call poison control to be sure.

Funny you should say that because I called after I got off line asn they said the calcium oxalate falls into the stomach ache or pain in mouth which I have neither at the moment. The calcium oxalate could have been the the bad one which rubarb leaves have and can damage the kidneys bad. i suggested water and she said have 2 glasses and i should be fine

Whew

I'm glad it's not serious! Whew!

I agree with you, they should have a warning somewhere at the store about this.

LOL . I sweat for a bit drank lots of water and am fine now. I also found out that rubarb leaves will actually damage the kidneys. I think there should be a sticky in the raw food section and here which provides information about raw veggies that can harm the body. I mean there was no warning in the store.

"Both the leaves and root of the taro plant are edible, but they are toxic when raw. Initially, the primary concern with raw taro was calcium oxalate, a crystalline chemical which can irritate the mucus membranes. However, it is now believed that the calcium oxalate merely acts as a carrier for other toxins, which enter the body through the damage to the mucus membranes caused by the irritant. Some people are more allergic to taro than others, and taro should always be thoroughly cooked to prevent a reaction."

I just ate a little raw taro leaf as I was preparing it for cooking. Poisons centre said to drink milk, eat yoghurt or other calcium rich food, like almonds, dates I think. It deactivates the oxylate apparently. Next time I'll check before eating a new food...

Just wanted to say I've eaten a bag of dehydrated raw taro chips and felt perfectly fine! I gave some to 3 friends and they were all fine.
