live in new orleans and am from santa cruz, ca. i've always had health problems: asthma, polycystic ovary syndrome, IBS, wheat intolerance, dairy intolerance (?), and the looming diabetes that runs in the family.
i don't want to fall victim to health problems that can be avoided by truly treating your body as the temple that it is.

i've just turned 21 and have always been passionate about food, cooking, and eating well with whole and organic foods. college hasn't really treated my body well and now going into my 4th year i know that i need to make a major change for the rest of my life. i've done a lot of research and i think that going raw (or 85% raw) would be a great think for me to do.

i've been vegetarian and vegan in the past but this time it's honestly about me, not the ethical treatment of animals used for meat and byproducts though i'm really glad that it's a great outcome.

i'll be going to Belize and have no internet access starting july 19th - august 12th and really want to do my best to stay raw down there too, i'm just worried about the health risks of not cooking out any little microscopic critters that my intestine might not be used it.

any raw folks ever have this problem or a problem like it? any suggestions? any help i could get putting together a packet of some sort to set myself for success abroad?

Hi,
I have a lot of stomach/intestinal issues too and am in Mexico right now. I do what the people here do with fruit which is to peel it and have had zero problems. With veggies there are drops (diluted ionized silver which you can get online or in some healthfood stores in the U.S.) that are added to water and then the veggies sit in the water for 10-15 minutes. They will probably sell the drops down there, but you could check at your local healthfood store or do an online search.

My other advice, which others might not like, is to stay vegan, eat as many healthy, clean fruits and veggies as possible, and enjoy your time. If you can have oatmeal, rice, or corn, I would consider keeping those on your diet while you're there, especially if there aren't raw options available. Don't beat yourself up if you find that you do have to eat things like that while you're there.

Here in Mexico I'm about 90% raw, but living with my boyfriend's family means that it's not always an option to be 100%. When I return home in August, I'll have my kitchen back and will be in control of what I'm eating. Right now I'm doing my best, keeping vegan, and enjoying my time here.

Good luck,
Ezme
