My dh frequently has an Ammonia scent. It's terrible when he takes showers as well because it hits you when you walk into the washroom. Sleeping next to him at night is fine but intimate encounters and when he sweats you can smell it. I try to ignore it but lately I have been looking up this issue and everything says liver or kidneys problems.. so now I am thinking he is in need of a detox.
He is a current smoke quitter so I am not sure how to go about getting him on a detox even if its only for a short time.
Anyone have any great home creations that can help detox the liver or kidneys for a man to try with great results??

I know you don't like to hear this, but I would have his kidney function checked. People with renal failure have this because their body can't excrete ammonia. Now maybe there are some natural treatments out there, but I would want to know what I was dealing with.

Get it checked out. Not to scare you-but I have heard that the body gives off an ammonia smell when systems are in crisis.

Wow, scary stuff...please don't let these responses scare you (or him!) but spur you to action! Yes, please get it checked out!
I don't know why men are so hesitant to go to Dr's when needed...better to know, even when you know you'll deal with it naturally, you gotta know what you're dealing with, & where to focus on healing!
I'll be keeping you both in my prayers!

I"ve heard is this happens when they're burning muscle, and the ammonia is a byproduct. So bottom line could be that he's not eating enough, esp before and after workouts/exercise. Used to happen to my husband, smelled like cat pee...and not in a good way lol until he adjusted his diet and food intake.
Check out his diet exercise routines.

A couple of things:
1) Have him drink more water than he does with lemon juice added. Lemon juice is a great kidney cleanser.
2) Watermelon, watermelon, watermelon!!! Make it into juice or eat as is.
3) Chlorophyll ~ gotten through salads, green smoothies or from a bottle mixed with juice.
If that doesn't handle it, I'd be very surprised.

Thanks everyone. How does one get kidney's and liver checked out? Is it a blood test given by the doctor? I don't know what to ask for??

They can be checked in blood tests. You can go to a nurse practitioner to have labs drawn. In my experience NPs are way more open minded and holistic than MDs. Explain what is going on and ask for the lab draws. The NP may have some other ideas, too. Best wishes!

The specific lab tests will be BUN and Creatinine. Good luck with this!

Actually, a BMP (Basic Metabolic Panel) will check his liver function in addition to the above.

You said that lemon juice is a great kidney cleaner. What effect do you expect from watermelon and chlorphyll?
Interested,

Definately check out a holistic health provider for the labs so you can direct your actions.
Go with Revvell advice in the interim or if you opt not to go to a practitioner
From what you decribed sound like the Ph balance is way off.
Does your DH also notice it?
Is he RAW?
If not will he at least consider Vegan?

Watermelon is also a great kidney cleanser and rebuilder. Chlorophyll is a blood cleanser and strengthener.
