View Full Version : Does pineapple burn your mouth?

Just wondered if I'm the only one that has this problem. Every time I eat pineapple (which I love), I wind up with my mouth burning.:( I can only eat about 1/4 of a pineapple. After that, with each chunk, my mouth burns more and more. I wonder what causes this, and I also wonder if it's bad for my stomach (although I don't have any stomach pain or burning). I'm concerned because I think the inside of my mouth is the same as the lining of my stomach, and I just hope I'm not doing any damage to it. The burning goes away in about an hour. Thank you for any input.

Check this out.

If you use the search feature (green bar up top) and type in certain key words, you'll find a lot of already answered questions...just a hint ;)

Yeah, we actually had another thread going about this before so do a search for more info. It only happens to me when it's non-organic pineapple and when I overdo it. My whole family gets this...it's sad bc we love pineapple.

The method posted above for cutting off the green top once the entire pineapple is pretty much yellow, then storing in fridge at LEASE overnight (to allow sugars and acids to drain) works on non-organic as well.

Now at least I know I'm not alone! I really love pineapple, so I won't stop eating it...I'll just stop when the burning starts. I don't have any problem with pineapple in my juice or smoothies - just eating it. Thanks again - glad I looked at the other posts (forgot about the "search" thingy:( )

I'm telling you I had to stop eating fresh pineapple because of the burn but the above mentioned way to cut it and store it (at least overnight, the longer, the better) it works. I have NEVER EVER since doing this had a pineapple burn my mouth.

I had this prob, too. I now make sure EVERY SINGLE BIT of the outside is cut away, I mean every bit and the last time I did this I ate an entire pineapple in one day and had no burning.

I think fresh pineapples bother most people. That is why they are always served in can which is dowsed in lots of sugar for marination. Even if not in a can, I think most fruit salads with pineapple are like a day or two old where the acids change.

I think fresh pineapple should be eaten in small amounts and with something else like in a smoothie.

I went to the store and passed up buying a pineapple even though I wanted some, because I just didn't want to be bothered with the tartness and acidity.

Yes. I can't eat fresh pineapple. Canned doesn't have that effect on me.

Yes. I can't eat fresh pineapple. Canned doesn't have that effect on me.

However, canned isn't even close to as yummy as fresh pineapple.

Yeah, I agree with this!

We don't get pineapple very often, because I hate buying something that is nonlocal AND corporation owned (my bananas are fair trade and small South American coop) but when we do, my boyfriend spends about 20-25 minutes cutting it, sometimes more. He's very meticulous and makes sure there is NOTHING but the inside juicy flesh.

I've never had a burning feeling, thank goodness. Fresh pineapple is one of the most delicious things, and it is always just very sweet for us. We also never cut it until 3-5 days after we bought it, which may help.

I think letting it rest in the fridge overnight once cut helps a lot..

I got 6 this week on offer..lovely.. got a pineapple corer for my birthday which is fab!! Pineapple rings.. core in the freezer and can use the hollowed out pineapple as a giant cup! :o

I'm telling you, once you bring it home, store it green side down, until it is golden all over. Then cut off the green side, put it cut side down in a bowl in the fridge at least overnight, the longer, the better, then using a pineapple corer (love this thing), cut it and I guarnatee it will not burn! IT REALLY WORKS FOLKS. REALLY WORKS!!!

Fresh pineapples have an enzyme in them called bromelain. This enzyme 'digests' proteins. If you eat too much pineapple, the bromelain can actually start to digest your mouth and tongue. I've had the mouth burn thing happen to me, so instead of eating it, I'd blend it in smoothies or make a blended juice (carrot/pineapple) with it...

I also read a while back to decrease the burning sensation while eating pineapple, you can add a little salt to it...it's supposed to make it taste sweeter. I'm going to actually try this next time I buy some fresh pineapple and see if this is true...
