I've only been sprouting for about a week now so I don't have a lot of experience with it yet. I use a 2-tray sprouter that sits in my kitchen. In this batch, I just noticed that a few of the sprout tails are covered in little white hair-like things. Is that mold? Do I need to throw out the whole tray of them or just the bad ones? Thanks for any input... I don't want to throw them out but I don't want to eat bad sprouts either :)

Radish sprouts have those fuzzy sprout tails -- radish seeds are a bit large and they're very common in sprout mixes, so that's probably what they are. The little hairs lie down when they're wet, so look at them before you rinse and after.

those are called root hairs. they are fine roots that are supposed to be there. mold looks different than root hairs.

Ditto the above! :D I just grew some more sprouts in my clay saucer and I saw the little white root hairs from the radish sprouts I had in my mix...as others said, add a little water on them and they lay down with no problem.

That is so funny! I just got done with my morning sprout rinsing, and noticed white hairs on a few sprouts. Not will to accept that they could have molded, I quickly rinsed them and was determined to eat them any way.
It is reassuring to know that is was not mold as it was amix of alfalfa and radish!
Thanks for the info!

Any other sprouts have white hairs on them? I think mine are radish but the seed box is in Dutch and I don't know all the types in there. I just dumped the whole tray thinking they were moldy!

I had some white fuzz on buckwheat sprouts too. I def think that was mold though. I picked them over and ate the good ones. Also, the spouts did better all around in the summer. Now it's cold, dark and damper here and i think they aren't growing as much day to day and could there be more mold?

Any suggestions or thoughts?

What exactly do you use the sprouts for? I'm sorry, I'm a newbie (started raw two days ago) and I have read a little about sprouting and know it's benefical in my health, but don't understand what I will be doing with them. Can someone clue me in?

Thanks

I agree with all of the above. The little white hairs are just looking for a drink.

As for what to use the sprouts for, almost anything you can imagine. They make great filling for nori rolls and I have also made a pate from sunflower and radish sprout combination.

Take care, Paul Le May.

I know this is an old thread, but other new members might stumble across it, so I'm responding to dierochell even though I'm sure you've found hundreds of ideas for sprouts by now!

Of course they're good tossed into salads, but I also add them to smoothies, in addition to using them in wraps and rolls, as Paul suggested. They give smoothies quite a boost in the mornings!
