A couple months ago I was complaining to my hairdresser that my hair was getting dull, lifeless and unmanageable. The girls gathered together looking down at my lackluster tresses....pondering my sad state of affairs. AHA!!! Menopause was the verdict!!
My hairdresser said to stop washing my hair so often, and condition. Seeing as how I was already using conditioner I knew that wasn't what was missing.
Also about that time I was getting quite skeptical about not only what was going IN my body...but what was going ON my body. I stopped using face care products. I "skin brushed" my face.....yes, I know they tell you not to, and I wash my face with water, and then I moisturize with Olive OIL!
After a while I noticed that my hair was getting easier to manage. As time went on it got better and better. Now I have strangers telling me how lovely my hair is!!! My 57 year old menopausal hair!!!
The Olive Oil that I was applying to my face was also improving the condition of my hair!!
I changed to a shampoo that does not have SLS!!!
Since I started adding raw to my diet it has only gotten better.

What a nice story! I'm hoping to see an improvement in my hair also.

and well almost everything we eat we put olive oil on it.
It also helped my knees, they use to ache and my legs.
I have washed my hair and put olive oil on it and it does help.

I'm 45 in menopause, and I've experienced something similar with my hair. It became dry as straw, I lost of lot of it, and it was extremely breakable. Now I only wash my hair once a week with SLS free shampoo. I take MSM and silica, and over the course of about a year, it's slowly gotten better. Menopause is a bear. Let me tell you. It's also aged my skin a lot, and it's very difficult to lose weight and extremely easy to gain it.

I too have noticed changes in my body, hair and nails since reaching "that certain age" where thermostats always seem to be set too high.
For many of us women, dull hair may be a sign of "under the radar" or non-clinical low thyroid function since it's not only the amounts of estrogen/progesterone in our bodies but our entire endocrine systems that go through changes. A raw food diet can only be a help and a blessing since all those nutrients, enzymes, and minerals will help to ameliorate symptoms.
It only makes sense that keeping the healthy fats up will help to lubricate and keep our systems humming, but I think that keeping well hydrated may be called for as well.

I'm only 49 but my hair is AWFUL! Used to be thick full and wavy. Now what's left of it (seems to be falling out like mad) is thin, fine and straight. Grrr...

P.S. Yes it's hard to lose weight when we're going through the changes, but there are things we can do.
What I've done when I've hit that "wall" and the weight just sits, is to reduce or eliminate my intake of "concentrated" foods like pate's, dehydrated foods, high glycemic sweet fruits, and upped my intake of high water content low glycemic vegetable juices (nice glass of green juice at least 2 times or more a day) and lots of salads but taking it easy on the oily dressings...I still eat an avocado a day, cutting it in thirds to accomodate my three HUGE but relatively low cal salads and I still had a handful of walnuts...they'll fill me up but not out...and the weight starts going downward again at a healthy 1 or 2 lbs. a week.

I have found that going raw is the only thing that seems to let me lose weight. My thyroid is not working, but one of my goals is to eat 100% raw for so long that it starts working again. I believe the dry hair is a product of slow thyroid function, among other things.

I noticed a lot of hair falling out about 6 months ago. I started using Burt's Bee's no SLS shampoo and conditioner (pomegranate & soy for volume). It was good, but I still noticed too much hair in the drain after a shower. Finally, I stumbled upon a website that suggested using VO5 conditioner (volume type) instead of shampoo. I've been doing that for the past 2 weeks and my hair is super shiny, soft and clean looking/smelling. I've also notice very little hair in the drain :D

Major added bonus: VO5 conditioner costs about a dollar!

I stopped using shampoo last January. I now wash my hair once a week with a mixture of distilled water and baking soda. I then rinse with apple cider vinegar (or plain vinegar). And a final rinse under the shower. The change in my hair has been amazing. It is no longer oily and is much shinier. I have also stopped loosing my hair and it is actually becoming thicker. I'll never go back to using any kind of shampoo/soap on my hair again.

How does it smell? Did it take you awhile to get used to that vinegar odor?

A dear friend has asked me about taking Biotin...anyone use that for hairloss?

I only recommended to her to use natural products and eat more raw food...she's on the typical SAD diet...so many ppl don't want to make the changes they need to

I have dry, thick very curly hair and haven't shampood for close to a year but condition daily. What really helped my hair get softer and more "ringlety" was to put a few drops of Jojoba oil mixed in to my conditioner and to fingercomb through. I also don't rinse it out. I towel dry very gently and never use a hair dryer.

This may not work for fine limp hair but good luck!

I am not 50 just 2 score and 3 so really should not be posting here. Anyway just checking out what’s up the line for me and noticed this post. If you want advice on hair, mine is drink wheatgrass. I drink wheatgrass but not all the time I would like to but sometimes find it difficult to grow. However when juicing and drinking it the first think I notice and this is after a week or 2 is my hair. It becomes full of life, shiny and strong and even my scalp feels good. I also read that wheatgrass can turn grey hair back to original colour. I don’t know if this true as I don’t have any grey.

The dry wheatgrass is not as good as freshly juiced but better that nothing.
