Hi, I am a mother of 3 (6 months, 22 months and 3 years old) who has her hands pretty full!! I have been exposed to eating vegetarian and raw food for 3 years now but have always found it too complicated to really follow through 100%. I just ran across Alissa's web site 2 weeks ago and so quickly ordered the book and the DVD and have been quiet amazed by all of the info that I was missing. I am currently breastfeeding my 6 month old (whom refuses to eat anything) and so am going raw slowly. But if I'm honest, there are 2 big reasons why I am hesitating going 100% raw.
First is that the recipes are quiet different than what my kids are used to so they are actually eating VERY little of what I am making and that scares me. I am afraid they will lose too much weight.
Secondly, is that I am a people pleaser and I know this sounds absurd but when I go to someone's house and they've prepared a cooked and Meat dish, I feel too bad to refuse and or feel that I will cause them too much trouble to have them prepare something else. I really want this diet but I don't know how to transition into it outside of my home.
As for the kids, well there isn't much info to go by in Alissa's book and I am afraid the kids will lack nutrition of some sort. I am also having a hard time finding certain key ingredients. For example, I have been searching for 1 full week now for Macadamian nuts and so cannot try out so many of Alissa's yummy recipes.
BUt I really and firmly believe that eating raw is the way we should all eat and I would love to be an example for my family and friends. I would alos love to be successful with this diet with my kids and introduce this diet to my sister as she has 2 kids with Cystic fibrosis. I really think that they too should switch to a raw diet but I know the convincing will be really hard as the nutrition info she is getting from her clinic is to eat High fat, high protein and high caloric no matter what the source. They are actually encouraged to eat junk food regularely and they are only 2 and 4 years old!

I am sorry this is so long but how I wish I could talk about this in person with someone.... have a trainer to guide me in the actual application of all this info....especially for my kids. I so don't want them to lack anything!

Thanx for reading!

Welcome!! I wish you the best of rawesome health! For info on raising raw vegan kids, check out the Taliferos at their Garden Diet site. They have 5 beautiful raw children - the youngest of which I think is getting close to 1 year old. The oldest is in her early teens I believe.

Hope this helps!

I have 4 kids (ages 12, 10, 4, and 3) and I've been working raw into their diet slowly. I've had the most success with sweeter things or things in fun shapes. Also, for my little ones, if I add "princess" to the name of whatever it is, they're more likely to eat or drink it, lol. If there's any way that you can have them help you with the prep, that helps too.

One of the things that they really like is my squash salad. I shred up some squash and then make a dressing out of greens, olive oil, a little avocado, a little coconut oil, a drop of apple cider vinegar, and a couple of dates. It gives it a nice sweet taste and a texture that they like, but it gets them to eat things they normally would have an issue with like greens and squash. Then I mix it all up and call it Shrek Salad. They usually ask for more.

You just have to find what makes your kids interested in eating raw things and try not to make the transition too abrupt.

Oh, yeah. I also add a cherry or two to their nut milk to make it pink. They are highly interested in all that is pink, lol.

Good luck! :)

You're totally right. Having the children involved is really the best! I guess the transitioning is a little harder when I am trying the new recipes and find out they like very little of it.... but I know that I just need to adapt it to them a little more with some experience. The truth of the matter is that I have quiet picky eaters to start off with so it does make it that much harder but thankfully, when they don't like the meal, they love just having simple pieces of veggies or fruits with a sauce and that really does help a lot! I will definately try the squash salad: a little question, when you refer to squash, which one are you talking about (summer, butternut, etc?) and how about the 'greens, can you give me an example... thanx

I've been trying out new recipes too but usually my daughter declines them. I'm just hoping the more she sees me eat this way that she will follow.

I also have a stepdaughter that is a VERY PICKY eater and I hope that she will soon follow in time too.

In the past when I did raw, my daughter would start eating more raw fruits and veggies. Surprisingly she loved spinach, would eat it right out of the bag while watching tv. Go figure.
