I am considering getting back into distance running. I am wondering what others experiences with raw and distance running are. Do you need to eat more, more of something specific, change your diet, avoid things? Just curious what I should be looking for...

Started running again yesterday, after months of being a lump. I started raw with this month's 30 day challenge, have lost at least ten pounds if not more so far, and have been really good about not cheating. I ran 3.5 miles today, and was seriously hungry afterward, and tempted by cooked grains for the first time. I chose not to, and ate some raw beet salad and hummus instead, and felt great afterward. I didn't need the grains, they were just what I was used to feeding that kind of sports hunger with.
I think that serious exercise like distance running will indeed require more protein and carbs. I plan, at the end of the 30 days, to add quinoa back to the diet, and a piece of meat or fish from time to time, as my body dictates. For now, maybe an extra banana in the morning smoothie, and a Larabar or extra piece of fruit during the day? I am not a huge fruit lover by nature, so I have to remind myself that fruit exists.

I wouldn't have been able to take up distance running if it weren't for raw. Wouldn't have had the energy. Not doing anything special to my diet...just listening to what my body wants, and if I don't, that's the only time I feel less than optimal.

I used to be a distance runner. I had my best cross country season EVER when I was eating a green smoothie for breakfast, raw trail mix for a snack, a raw lunch and a cooked vegan dinner. I'm sure that I could run even better now that I am 100% raw, but I have taken up more strength training instead (after 4 years of running, I need a change).
Dates are a great post-run food because they quickly give your blood sugar a boost and contain lots of potassium to replenish your electrolytes. Goji berries are a fabulous long-lasting, easily digested source of energy for before a run. And don't forget greens to build up your muscles!!!! I heart greens :D .
But yeah, like iamacranberry said, your body gives you the best advice as to what to eat once you take out all of the processed food that messes up your body's natural hunger signals.

While checking out videos on Kevin Gianni's Raw Food Renegade site I came across one with a gentleman named Frank Giglio. He is a raw chef and an avid distance runner. He is in training for the VT100 right now. His website is www.rawfoodfrank.wordpress.com. You should be able to find loads of info there. Hope this helps.

I've been running ultramarathons for a few years now, and switched to a low-fat raw vegan diet last November.
I recently finished 2nd at the Mohican 100, with a time of 18:40.
That's a lot better than I did last year, when I finished in 53rd place, in 27 hours.
