View Full Version : Having weird pains

So, I'm brand new to raw/vegan and I've been about 90% raw for almost 2 weeks. I really love the way that I feel, other than strange pains that I'm getting which I'm guessing are because of detoxing? I have pain in my upper right arm (on the inside, right below the armpit), pain in what feels like my tailbone area, and strong intermittent pain in my knee (I have a history of knee injuries from playing basketball alot when I was young) that I haven't had an issue with in the last couple of years.
Do you guys think that these pains are due to detox? Is there anything that I can include in my diet that might help with this? I was thinking that maybe aloe vera juice might help with my knee. I don't really know, lol, I'm just a SAD girl trying to recover.

It might be that you are detoxing and trying to recover. I am having weird pains too but I haven't done the RAW diet yet like you have. I 'm planning to start soon and hope that it gets rid of my weird pains lol.;)

MSM will greatly assist. It goes in and heals old scar tissue... that 'may' be what's happening.
I would definitely schedule a doctor's visit though.

Well if the pains are unusual I would say it is detox. Remember you have lymph nodes all over your body. There is a lot of cleansing going on. Intestines, kidneys and bladder which could be connected to the pain in the tailbone.
When I started eating a raw diet, I didn't quite understand just how toxic the body gets in todays world. After studying Gmo's, aspartame, flouride, etcc.. I realize why detox can be so dramatic for some people. I find self-massage is helpful. Try that.

Thanks for the advice! :)
For those of you that had detox aches and pains, how long did they last?
I pretty much never have any issues like that, so I'm pretty sure that it's just detox, but at what point should I wonder if it's something else?
I think I'll call for an appointment, just to be sure. I'm sure that my doctor will be very happy about my 12+ pound loss!

I usually get pains while fasting. Specifically, pain in the knee, and a dull soreness in my upper arm muscles.
In my experience, pain is 99% of the time associated with the body healing itself. You get a cut, it hurts. If it doesn't hurt, it doesn't heal very fast. The same thing goes with dieting. Faster detox is usually associated with increased pain.
I usually just take it as a sign that the body is becoming stronger. As they say in the US military, "Pain is weakness leaving the body" Or the short version, "No pain, no gain"
Of course, I'm used to it. I work out constantly. People like me who do lots of plyometrics and physical training know that a certain amount of pain is necessary to get stronger. There are generally two instances when pain is not good. This is when the pain is associated with a severe injury that may not heal properly. Or when the pain itself is interfering with your daily activities. For example, if your change of diet produced severe cramping of the abdominal muscles, it would probably be a good idea to take your diet slower.
Even though pain can often be a good sign, it is not good if that pain causes you to injure yourself. If you are experiencing pain beyond your tolerance level, it is a good sign that you are doing something to the body that you aren't prepared to handle.
Moderation is key in everything. If you never take a leap of faith, you'll never learn anything. If you take a leap too hastily, your landing is going to be very rough.

Thanks so much for responding. :) That helped set my mind at ease.
My knee pain is gone, and my arm aches are alot better. I'm giving my tailbone a rest by staying off of my bikes and switching to working out on the treadmill instead. With a good incline I can get a similar workout, although I worry about walking too much with all of that weight on my knees. So far so good though.

Just now seeing this posting i noticed it's gone away.
Pains come and go, i'm glad to get rid of them, body cleansing itself:D
We never know how dirty we were on the inside, it makes me nervous.
Knowing that the filth could have shortened my life, leading to disease and maybe an early death.

I've got pains too that are off and on. Also some numbness. I've been mostly raw for 4 days now.

It IS kind of scary when you think about it, but it feels so great to finally be doing something about it. Do you work at a computer all day? I tend to notice that under arm coming back a little if I keep my hand on my mouse too long without stretching or moving.
Congrats on the 12 lbs gone! :)
Thanks! :D

I had some numbness in my knee areas during the first week. It was kind of freaky, lol. It went away pretty quick, though. Where is your numbness?

It should/might be temporary only, caused by the strange turn,Your organism has to react to after You turned vegan. In a while it should pass as the body copes with the adjustment.May be the turn from carnivoral food is too hursh for You.Or try going slower here, not from meat to raw carrots immediately, but first to dairy, some later from dairy to cooked vegetarian stuff, and so on.
