What happens if you plant hemp seeds...do they grow here?

Most hemp is heat treated to make sure that is DOESN'T grow. Although, I have been able to sprout some. Just don't let anyone know what you are doing.

Oh, I didn't know if it would flower or something. I know nothing about marijuana and wouldn't want to be growing that but I did think hemp seeds were different?

Hemp *is* marijuana.

Supposedly the kind Nutiva sells that we eat would not grow drug-quality marijuana even if you could get them to sprout...low THC I guess? But it's still marijuana and would look the same, etc - might not want it in your garden :)

I heard somewhere (I can't remember where but I believe the source was reliable) that hemp and marijuana are not the same thing.

Some varieties of hemp contain practically no THC and cannot be used as a drug. But yes, hemp and marijuana are the same plant.

marijuana is from a different strain of the plant than industrial hemp. industrial hemp is low in thc. pretty sure they're both illegal to grow in the us.

grow in the US.
One web site says that hemp can replace imported oil. In colonial times it was used for everything - clothing, paper, ship masts. Probably too much competition with other industries to allow people to keep using it.

FloridaPatty--isn't that the truth? I've heard the same thing. There's a great documentary about it but I don't remember what it's called. It's so affordable and sustainable, much like bamboo, but yes, we choose not to grow it here for the reasons you mentioned and the fear of marijuana here.

They are very different.:p
There are no laws in the US or Canada that make possession of hemp illegal. This includes the sterilized seed, hemp seed oil, hemp seed flour, hemp seed cake, shelled hemp seeds, hemp hearts, hemp clothing, hemp fabrics, hemp fuel or any other product made from INDUSTRIAL HEMP.
While industrial hemp and the products made from it are legal, hemp's cousin, marijuana is in fact illegal. There are many strains of hemp that produce little or no THC. There are also strains of Cannibis Sativa that produce high levels of THC. These strains would be considered Marijuana. There is nothing similar between marijuana and hemp. They may as well be different plants as they are grown differently, processed differently, are made from different parts of the plant and have grown so far apart genetically that they are, for all intents and purposes, completely different plants.

Hemp is illegal to grow in the us. Having a hemp plant is illegal. Unless you get some kind of gov't approval. We have a gov't with no brain. Hemp probably looks too much like it's cousin and they have trouble telling them apart. No one wants a confused gov't agent digging up their garden.
