I just spent 2 hours shredding and washing around 5 heads of kale. Should it take this long? I pull the leaves off the stem/rind and then shred them with my hands in bite size pieces, wash them with my salad spinner etc. I wish they sold kale bagged! But it is worth it! Any tips to make it faster?
They sell it bagged at my store, but not organic so I don't buy it.
I hold the whole bunch with my left hand, and chop with a super sized knife in one direction, then cut the other direction. I only do this for one head at a time, either for a salad or GS, and it takes me about 2-3 minutes at most. I move pretty quickly, though. It helps to have a non-serated but very sharp big knife in my experience.

It should not take 2 hours. I shred my kale into bite size pieces directly off the stem.

Maybe this is a dumb question... but what do you shred kale for? I know when I juice it I just pull the leaves off the stem and feed it through the juicer, or pull some off to put in a GS. Just curious :o
To eat it without juicing --- although I used to juice the stems and eat the leaves. I enjoyed adding this to carrot and apple juice through a juicer for the "harder" veggies and fruits. :)
Of course, these days, I just eat all of it and enjoy as I'm not juicing so much these days and my husband is not eating my salads and complaining that he hates the stem.

You can use the shredding disc on your food processor. This will leave a few leaves hovering around the top that didn't get shredded. You can just cut these up with a knife.
Or... You can stack the leaves and cut in thin strips with a knife. If these are too big, you can cut them across into smaller pieces.

I have a huge kale salad for dinner every night - it is my newest addiction :)
I may try to cut it up with a knife and see if that goes faster. When I was using kale in my smoothies it didn't take any time at all since I would put whole leaves in.

I guess kale is so strong for me that I never even thought of eating it except being juiced  duh. So do you put any particular dressing with your kale salad? I'll have to give it a try.

Kale chips guys- massaged with olive oil and seasonings, dehydrated! Maybe you can just tear it into pieces and have it that way-- just a thought!

The salad I eat is a Avocado Kale Salad recipe I found on goneraw.com
Avocado Kale Salad
Serves 4
A small portion of the salad is a great side, but it is also filling enough to serve as a stand-alone meal.
Ingredients
1 head kale, shredded
1 cup tomato, chopped
1 avocado
2 tablespoons grapeseed or olive oil **(I do 1tbs hemp oil and 1tbs olive oil)
1 tablespoon lemon juice
celtic sea salt, to taste
½ teaspoon cayenne **(for some reason I thought it said 1/4 tsp so thats what I have been using - took me a few salads to get used to that! hehe)
Preparation
In mixing bowl, toss all ingredients together. Mush everything together (with hands) to created marinated/wilted effect on kale. This makes it much tastier and easier to digest.

This is terrific! It was my first experience with Kale and I loved it. It helps though to massage in the oil and salt first (squeezing it) to get the leaves soft and to marinate the leaves really well. Then add the other ingredients. I added sliced onions to my salad (I love onions) and it was even more fabulous! I found that it gave me slight indigestion, but I think I"ll leave the oil and salt marinade on a little while before adding the other ingredients. To wilt the kale down some more. Definitely a "Do-again" recipe.

Best way to shred the kale:
Remove from the stem ~roll up the kale leaves as tightly as possible & slice thin.
Enjoy!
