Been trying to look this up but unable... Seems lentils and quinoa bulk up the most of all sprouts, and are cheapest to buy... or are there others?

What is the best way to prepare quinoa? All I can think of is putting them in green smoothies. Would it be good just mixed into bars with honey and dried fruit??

Thanks so much for your help.

I make a salad that has cucumber, tomatoes, scallions, seasoning and then I add in sunflower seeds and sesame seeds.....if the salad isn't eaten in a couple days, my sunflower seeds always start to get little tails on them....I love it, I truely can say that this salad get better and more nutritious with age. Your right sunflower seeds are inexpensive and fast and even sprout in the refridgerator.

to prepare quinoa the raw way i usually just soak them in water for at least 12 hours ( if i remember correctly ) if you mix them with lemon juice a little olive oil mint tomatoes avos and so forth... ( the recipe is in julianos and sarmas book.... i like sarmas better ) but anyway... it tastes sooo good and refreshing... it's the raw verson on quinoa tabouli.... YUM!

I bought some sprouting seeds from Burpee.com three years ago...it was the 'zesty mix' with alfalfa, clover, broccoli and radish seeds. I took them out of storage last weekend to see if they'd still sprout...and lo and behold, they did! I used two tablespoons of seeds and sprouted them in a 28oz mason jar. They filled the jar nicely and they taste scrumptious! :D

They were not very expensive at all...I got a 1/4 pound package for about $5.99 I think...it lasts a very long time. Mountainroseherbs.com also has organic sprouting seeds in the $5-$6 range also.

Hope this helps!

I've only ever sprouted with Alfalfa seeds. In the store they always seem to be the cheapest so thats what I've always bought.

I'd love to try others though. If you sprout quinoa can you sprout the same stuff people buy in the bulk bins to cook up on the stove? Or does it have to be special sprouting seeds?

It's the same quinoa, whether you sprout it or cook it. Same with other grains. I've never put sprouted quinoa in smoothies -- it's pretty dry and it seems to me it would be like adding blackberry seeds. I've used it in salads and added it (unblended) to green raw soups, though. Lentils get my vote for best yield/cheapest/easiest sprout. I like barley a lot too, and buckwheat.

iherb.com has alfalfa and a zesty mix. Each are around $5 for a pound of seeds.

awesome, I will try sprouting some of my quiona next.

How about flax seeds, will those sprout as well? Anyone ever tried that?

I was doing a google search on the taste of flax sprouts and found a sprout germination chart that may come in handy for this topic. It gives the yields for each type of sprout so you'll know what to expect...

Enjoy!
