View Full Version : I have a serious LOVE affair...

...with my new dehydrator!!!

I just made some RAWsome cookies yesterday in the dehydrator. This is the best thing I've bought for myself in a very long time! I can't stop telling my friends how much I LOVE my dehydrator. Ok... I may have a serious 'thing' for it. Yep! I even hugged it yesterday! :D

I tend to not like to make raw dishes much because it feels like it's a LOT of work (and dishes to clean from FP to juicer to Vitamix and more) for one person (me) and without knowing in advance that I will like it or not (for all of the effort). Sooo.... I'm experimenting. I feel like making things in the dehydrator (so far) is more rewarding because they are mostly things that are more substantial and will last a bit longer. It's great!

If anyone has a favorite (and fairly simple) dehydrated recipe, I would love to know what it is! (Sweet and/or savory)

Thank you!

I understand what you mean!

I posted last week about how attached I am to my bread machine, recipe books and other small appliances...

But my dehydrator has replaced my love for the bread machine.... because with the dehydrator I can make way more than just bread!!!:p

Alissa's book and Ani's recipe book are helping with my attachment to my recipe books...

Now about my attachment to my kitchen aid mixer, I love that thing!!!..... I don't know what will help with it....:(

There's tons of good bread and cracker recipes in Alissa's book... I'm dehydrating corn chips from it right now!:D

angelia:

The Corn Chips sound great! I keep checking out Alissa's book from the library (2 of them) when I can get them (again). I will have to save up soon so I can own her book! So much on my 'want' list lately!

*squeal* I'm so excited to use mine!! Amazingly, it arrived a week ago, but I haven't had time to make anything with it yet. What cookie recipe did you use?

I have been CRAVING flax crackers so I think those will be the first thing I make! (I also need to get Ani's book... I LOVE Alissa's and have a few other good ones, but I heard Ani's interview on the Raw Summit and she sounds so much like me, I can't wait to try her concoctions too!)

I actually used a 'scone' recipe from "12 Steps to Raw Foods" by Victoria Boutenko, but they seem more like a cookie to me.

I don't know the protocol on recipe duplication on the forum. If you email me directly, I'd be happy to give it to you, or if you know that it's ok to offer it up here on the forum so long as I give the originator credit.

Let me know, ok?

It has apples, carrots, nuts, etc. in it. FUNNY...when I was grating the apples in my FP, they looked so nice and juicy grated up. Soooo...I took a spoonful and ate it. WOW! I loved it! Amazing that in my entire life, I'd never had grated apple! What a delicacy and super-easy fun food!

Ooh, you're right, didn't think about that -- nope, don't share it here -- I have that book (and most of Victoria's and her kids' other books) -- I will see if I can find it!

Oh shoot, I need a new fp before I can make it, I guess! I'm still using my teeny-tiny fp (I call it a "pocket fp") and want to be a gigantic Cuisinart one.

eta: found it! p. 242?

It's called "Alla's Cranberry Scones" pg. 242...but I used Goji Berries instead of cranberries. They turned out wonderfully!

Funny about the 'pocket' fp! You only need to use a fp for each ingredient separately, so you could do it in small batches I suppose. The apples and carrots need to be grated, and for me it's easier with the attachment on my fp. Also, the nuts need to be chopped, but that could be done in a Vitamix or similar if you have it. The ingredients are then put together in a big bowl and mixed by hand. LITERALLY...

It makes a huge batch. I had a very large glass bowl and it was full to the rim. My housemate (who is a major carnivore) loves them! I'm also making some cacao almond "joy" bars for her because the last batch I made disappeared like a flash! I feel like my challenge is to make things to have in the house that I'll eat of course, but also that she might pick up for a change instead of some of the really awful SAD food she chooses. I let HER choose though. I'm not into converting anyone that isn't ready or willing. I think it's great that she's now asking for some of these foods!!!!:D This morning she asked if I would make some more chocolate! So very cool!

I wanted to make flax crackers for my first recipe in my new love...my deydrator..., but it seemed more complex and the cracker recipe I want to make needs to 'ferment' overnight. I'm waaaay too impatient for that, so I make the 'scones'. (which I call cookies) YUM! I can't keep my hands out of the container!

Let me know if you make them, and if so, whether you like them.

Actually it's on a wonderful website that I found on another thread within this forum recently. Here's the link. http://thesunnyrawkitchen.blogspot.com/2008/05/recipe-of-week-perfect-chocolate-bar.html

They call them "The Perfect Chocolate Bar", but I like to call them Almond "Joy" Bars because well...obviously they taste similar to SAD Almond Joy Bars, but also because the Cacao is like a happy powder for me. :D

'IN'JOY!

Hey Angelia,
I have a kitchen aid mixer and I use it all the time in my raw food prep. You can get an attachment that chops zuchini and carrots into ultra thin chips. I have an attachment that grates carrots. I also have an ice cream maker attachment that I use to make raw ice cream and sorbet. I even have a citrus juicer attachment for my kitchen aid mixer that I use to make fresh orange juice. It's the best. So, enjoy accesorizing your beloved kitchen aid! :D

I'm jealous of all you guys with dehydrators.

Glad you (and raven) like it too! I have it in my house, too, as framed art. Found it by chance at a Franklin Covey store of all places years ago!

Still love my dehydrator more though...LOL... Makin' my first batch of flax crackers this morning. Used a recipe that required 'fermenting' overnight (I'm generally not that patient, but I did it anyway:cool: ), so I got up and set them up in the dehydrator a while ago. I don't know how long they will take, but I'm VERY excited to see how they turn out. The 'cookies' were divine!
