Our sweet 6 mo ADORES eating solids and we're trying to raise him as raw as possible. So far he's about 99% breastfed, just a few tries of solids here and there. He's had banana and pear, and gnawed on some apple core a couple of times (all organic).

The first few times he had banana there were no problems at all, barring the mini-tantrum when the bowl was finally empty. The third and fourth time, though, he was fine until about 2 hours later, when he'd start projectile vomiting until he had dry heaves. The first time he had an extremely mild fever; the second he had cold sweats. Both times he got super lethargic.

I'm guessing a sudden onset food sensitivity .. buuuut .. aren't two of the highest recommended raw foods for babies bananas and avocadoes? Don't avocadoes fall under the same risk for latex sensitivity as bananas (and mangoes)?

He loves pear, but if we want to feed him as much raw as possible and bananas and avos are BOTH out .. um .. well, at least for his parents, those two fruits are very handy for easy calories. We'll certainly try him again at least after a year, probably a bit earlier, as I hear these things can resolve themselves as the tract matures ..

Any other raw fruits that tend to get along well with babies? Any that are more calorie-dense than pear or apple?

P.S. I'm fully prepared to BF until he self-weans. I meant to exclusively BF until a year or so, but he is just so smitten with those colorful foods he sees us eat (you should see him launch himself headfirst at a salad). My two siblings and I all self-weaned before a year because solids were just too damn interesting. Maybe there's a genetic component to that?

In his book "The Juiceman's Power of Juicing" Jay Kordich says on page 268 that he started feeding his little ones fresh juice mixed with some water at 6 months old. You might try some fresh apple juice or orange juice and see how he likes that. Jay says that he mixed the juice with at least 50% water until they were 8 months old and then gradually reduced the water % until they were 12 months old.

Very cool. We'll definitely try that, thanks!

My daughter is allergic to bananas. I don't know what reaction they cause in her because we haven't given her any since we found out about the allergy. She used to be sick all the time with stomach problems, ear and sinus infections. And her behavior was off. She couldn't concentrate or listen because she was so sick.

She does not seem to be allergic to latex or mangoes. Although she hates mangoes. And avocadoes. Always has.
