View Full Version : Raw greens make me bloated

I really like the way my greens taste raw in smoothies. Maybe a bit "metallic", for they're organic and very rich in those. Nevertheless they make me bloat like mad! I mean, very little pain but bloating for hours!

Has anyone read the Andreas Moritz book, Timeless Secrets for Health and Rejuvenation? It's somewhat based on Ayurveda. So, according to that system, I'm a Vatta-Kapha type. Vatas supposedly don't tolerate most vegetables and should avoid them, unless they're cooked and spiced. For 3 weeks I had them lightly steamed at lunch time as a sidedish. Well, sorry, no bloating, but then the water at the bottom of the steaming pot was green and I knew that was what had been lost in nutritional values.

Today I decided to try raw again, but more spaced throughout the day. Bloating again!

Any tips? Suggestions? Anyone had a similar struggle or you all have no problems with raw, can eat a whole tree and be alright! heheh kidding

Thnaks for reading.

Sadly, bloating is normal when beginning raw :( .
But the good news is that in a few weeks of eating 100% raw, your body will adjust and begin to digest raw foods more efficiently.
Just give it time, and if the bloating gets really bad, consider taking some enzymes or eating foods that are super rich in enzymes, such as papaya.

Sometimes (temporary) bloating is good! It may mean your body is holding in water in order to help you to heal!

If I haven't been exercising much, I ALWAYS feel bloated and icky the first couple weeks after starting back. For the longest time, this would drive me crazy and discourage me. Then I found out this sometimes happens because my body is holding in the water to help use it to rebuild my muscles and make me stronger.

Sooo, since I don't eat things like rice and pasta that create bloating for "bad" reasons, if I'm bloated these days I embrace it and hope my body is instinctively helping me better than I would have known to help myself if I were in charge of these innate processes. :)

To rawstrength
Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge and experience.
It happened for months! I want raw, but what if I steamed the vegetables with mineral water and drank it after, like a soup? Wouldn't it be almost as good?

Tank you for your reply, it's really encouraging! Where did you learn that?
You know, all that gas has to come out and it does in incovenient places, like the elevator, classroom, somebody else's car... Exercising helps releasing it, of course, but I have a 12h (sometimes more) buffer between dinner and breakfast, and I wake up still a little bloated.
