I'm a big fan of mushrooms. I tried out a different store today and it had some mushrooms that I have never tried before so I bought a few of each to see if I like them. I got Cremini, Oyster and shiitake. I was wondering if anyone here has tried these types and what did you think about them? Are they safe to eat raw? Any extra information would be nice. I looked up the basic health information and stuff. I get terrible anxiety over anything that I think might make me sick and I wouldn't want to buy some mushrooms and end up seeing stuff. If I can ease my anxiety over the "new" mushrooms then I'll be fine. I did try a taste of the shiitake and it had a very nice flavor to it, something I have never tasted before and the flavor was quite strong and lasted in my mouth long after the bite was gone.

Those mushroom are safe to eat raw. I eat the crimini mushrooms every day with my salads along with a portabella I cut up and soak in unpasteurized soy sauce with onion powder and garlic powder, dried basil and parsley. I also put sliced onions in there too. I have not tried those other mushroom, but I am sure they are just as safe and IF I had access to them they would also be soaking and being used in my salads.
Unfortunately, the cost for the portabella has now risen to $6.99 for ONE mushroom and that is very expensive for my food budget!
I eat raw mushrooms all the time. I love them.
I highly suggest trying Alissa's tomato, mushroom and basil salad if you have not already. It is delicious!

The regular white common mushroom is the one that I usually eat but these others were a little foreign to me so I was nervous about eating them. I know that they must be safe to eat or they wouldn't be in the produce section of the store but it still made me nervous lol. I'm goofy like that I guess.
One day a long time ago, I made this soup called Pho. It's a vietnamese noodle soup. Anyway it called for ginger so I put some in while I was cooking and it was the best pot of pho that I had ever had. About 30 minutes later I read in one of my books that the indians used to use ginger to hallucinate on. Well, I dumped out the entire pot of soup and called a friend over to sit with me just in case something happened. It took me about 2 years to be able to eat ginger and feel safe about it. Now I have no problem eating it. That's just an example of how nervous I get about strange foods.

There have been a few studies here and there that suggest a small toxic risk for all raw mushrooms, but nothing to my knowledge has been conclusive.

Get some oyster mushrooms; add some lemon juice and a lil salt and tell us how you like it.
I'm not a fungus eater but when I see oyster mushrooms, I drool.

Okay I tried the mushrooms and actually didn't like them at all. The oyster had a slightly funny taste so I tried the shiitake and HATED it. I had to go brush my teeth right after eating it and was woke up early in the morning by the taste still being there in my mouth. I'll never eat shiitake again. I do love the regular mushrooms so I'll just eat those from now on.

It's ok; we all have different tastes. And raw mushrooms, as I mentioned, may or may not have small amounts of toxins.
