View Full Version : P90X and Raw

I'm entering day 4 of P90X using a 100% raw vegan diet. (or 98% as no one's perfect) I feel great so far and my motivation to workout is high. Wheatgrass juice is key, people! I don't have access to many dark leafy greens this week but next week I'll have my Blendtec and plenty of organic greens to make smoothies with.

I don't know of anyone who did a full P90X workout (90 days) using only a raw vegan diet, so I'll be pushing this to the extreme.

Caveat: I have decided, however, in extreme situations, if I have no other option, I should allow a limited Paleolithic diet. But this will be very rare and I haven't had any problems this week so far with raw.

You can get just as good if not better results by doing a quarter of the work as a raw vegan, depending on your goals most raw vegans really don't have to work that hard because 90% of the results are in the diet.

Sorry I'm probably sticking my nose in where it don't belong!

I too am wanting to try P90X with a raw diet. I've never completed the whole program. Back when eating cooked food I'd always make it through the first 3 weeks and end up getting some bug and be down for a couple weeks until I felt ready to go again. Then, I'd pick back up where I left off or start back over again. It seemed like it was just the same thing over and over again. So hopefully with a diet void of meat (which they make you think you need) and living on raw food will provide me with a strong healthy body to complete the program.

I would love to complete the whole program. It seems to cover all the basis in fitness. Fantastic program IMO. So, I'm thinking of starting back up tomorrow morning.

Please keep us updated on your progress with P90X on the raw food diet. I'd love to see some amazing results with this and have proof for others that one can gain muscle and look even better with this type of diet.

Will do. I am about to order a new scale to track my bodyfat %, etc. along the way. Right now I'm basing everything on how I feel.

I feel good though! I even feel more motivated to work out in mornings (some cardio) along with my evening P90X. I'm not entirely sure if I'm getting the optimal nutrition, but I'm still following my instincts here... and my gut, as it were. I eat when I feel I should get more nutrition, not when I am bored (like I always did when I ate cooked food). I'm not done with cooked foods forever, but I am enjoying the ride on raw vegan with P90X thus far.

By the end of July I should have a pretty decent body. I've done max 14 days raw vegan with intense workout, and I usually showed results by then.

Hey folks, update on the raw vegan diet with P90X. I just finished biceps & backs. Pretty rough day, I'm very weak from not working out for the last year. But I feel GREAT! And I'm entirely raw (except for 1-2 NoDoze I take around 1130.... I have to cheat a little bit during the week and sleep on weekends as I work 90 hour weeks every week without fail)

I'm still getting in HIIT every other morning, about 20 minutes total. I feel great after that as well.

I ordered a Tania scale w/ body fat % and athletic mode ($60) plus I've also ordered a $10 book on Rhodiola Rosea, which I've tried before but had mixed reaction to. Now I'm going to re-read the research behind Rhodiola and then start taking some Arctic Root (which is a brand name for Rhodiola that is produced by the Swedish Herbal Institute).

Once the scale comes in, I will keep track of my weight and, more importantly, my bodyfat %.

Will this combination of HIIT and P90X with a raw vegan diet lead to super ripped abs, amazing energy and strength, clear thinking, detox? We shall find out!

I am also doing raw and the Power 90 workout program. Today is day one. Can we do this together? I know that the P90X is a more intense program and after having my son a year ago and haven't exercise much since he was born I decided that the Power 90 is the workout for me and hopefully I can work up to the P90X.

I can't believe I found a thread for this online! My husband and I have been raw for a year and a half now and have just started P90X. We have had a lot of questions about the menu plan and what to do. We know the raw diet can be sufficient for this intensity in working out but not sure what we need to do to make it optimum. I know my husband in particular is really worried about having enough not to "bonk" as time goes on. How are you guys doing with this??!!

Has anyone else done this? I am pretty lean and toned but am wanting to build some brute strength. This seems like a good way to do it, but I would love to hear from anyone who has completed the program...

check out runningraw.com. Tim Van Orden is a major extreme athlete who eats only raw with no superfoods.

Also, Brendan Brazier, with The Thrive Diet-hes a triathlete and talks a lot about training super hard and eating high or all raw vegan. Those are great resources.

I'm training for 1/2 marathon in April and thought my next thing would be the p90x, so I'm so glad to see your postings here. Can't wait to hear your results. I'm hoping to start in April after the marathon.

I just got the Chalean Extreme, because my husband wouldn't let me put a chin-up bar on the door jamb. So doing it raw and will update. I am into my first week and things are going well. She doesn't have but two videos of cardio, may supplement lite jogging/biking on rest days.

I love the running raw site! :) But I am wanting to do a lot of low-impact workouts. I had an accident a ways back that left my right leg a little more fragile. I think I need to strengthen the muscles close to my knees big time before I start doing a lot of high-impact workouts again...

Yay! Funny, I'm wanting to do it the other way around because of the knee issues I just mentioned! I was training for a marathon when I got into a bad motorcycle accident, and I have not been able to get back into it since then. I'm hoping that yoga and low-impact cardio, mixed with a lot more strength will get me to where you are now!

That's the only reason I haven't yet purchased the P90X set yet... While I'm in school, I'm in FL where my mom is, and she doesn't own the place where she lives. She says "no" on the chin-up bar. I scouted out a cheap gym close by. I'm trying to figure out how to do some of the workouts there. I may just go ahead and order the system... But would you mind tell us about this other system??

And has anyone else had experiences with P90X on raw??

Eva - The ChaLean Extreme is more weight lifting. More heavy weights with low reps at a slower pace. Lots of squats, sumo squats, lunges. Ow! My muscles are a little sore today. I was kind of complaining about only 2 cardio videos, BUT - did the Burn Intervals yesterday and man! It's 2 min intervals of "recovery lifting" of lighter weights and then intense cardio, which includes something like bowling lunges, or doing like speed skating, "jumping rope" moves that really gets your heart rate up. I just started and tomorrow is the second cardio day - it's called Burn It Off - I'm guessing it's going to be a killer.

Stronger quads will help your knee. It just depends on the route you want to take to get there. You will know that best. I hope my description has possibly helped to get an understanding of the program. Good luck!

All right... I looked into ChaLean Extreme. Looked at P90X again. And then I ended up looking at a bunch of other videos. LOL -- I ended up getting a set of Baptiste yoga videos and a Jillian something toning video. I'm thinking (since I'm in yoga teacher training now) that it would be good to use the Baptiste videos since I've only had yoga classes in person and haven't had any experience with him.

Then after a couple months using the toning video and getting familiar with Baptiste's yoga style and see what I want from there. The ChaLean Extreme is actually more appealing than P90X at this point. You'll have to update us as you move forward with it!

Hey Mel, did you have to install a chinup bar at home? This was my most real concern. I would hate to have to join a gym just for this... I ordered a "30-day burn" DVD for my strength to sort of prepare for my next step and take another few weeks to survey the options. :)

one of the best things i've bought is a chinup bar that fastens on to any doorway without having to nail or screw anything in. here's a link to one.. i got mine from wal mart for $40.

I'm really enjoying it. Every video so far (in week 4 right now) has been good imo except the yoga I find too long (90min) I'd rather do bikram yoga.
Its super challenging, and very intense. Be prepared to work hard!
My boyfriend doesn't like the yoga one as well as the kenpox and core synergistics, but I think that's an excuse to take another rest day and work instead :p

You know what? Check Craigslist.com
I got mine for 60.00 on Craigslist, cannot hurt to look.
I did it while not on a raw diet and I started raw this week and so far I've been just fine.
Cannot wait to see the increase in benefits from eating raw and doing P90X.............Bring it!!
Ya, it's worth it - I really do like it.

LOVE my P90X workouts! On a sick break at moment. I clearly remember one of the reasons I was happy to move away from this area - it has been warm, chilly, sunny, rainy, overcast, and gorgeous....all since Monday! This wreaks havoc on my sinuses - and I have been sniffling/snorting/exhausted all week....but volleyball just ended so I can focus on P90X daily!

My husband and I are starting this week--me mostly raw and him not so much. We're tweaking it a bit in that since I'm also detoxing this week, we're *starting* with the Phase 1 Week 4 Recovery with lots of Yoga and X Stretch. Then on to the Classic program for our first go around.

Neither of us can completely pass the Fitness test recommended prior to starting, but there's enough modification in the program itself that we should be able to do all the dvds. We've watched them all through so we know what we're getting into.

As for the chin up bar, it's only really necessary for the pre and post tests. Go to a park and find some monkey bars! The dvds themselves offer (and recommend) the resistance band option. That's what we're going to be using.

So today will be officially called Prep Day 1 with Classic slated to start on Monday when I'm finished with detox. Let's see how it goes.

btw, before getting this program, I talked to my son in the Army, and he said some of his buddies had been doing it. They were seeing much better results with P90X than the daily PT that everyone does together.

One thing that Tony Horton keeps emphasizing is that the exercises can be modified to fit your current level. The whole point is to just get up and do something, even if you can't do as many reps or get into deep positions like the people demonstrating the moves.

I'm close to 100 pounds over my ideal weight, and I'm not letting that stop me. The Nautilus circuits and mat work I've been doing have made me a lot stronger than I look. When my husband and I took the Fit Test that you're supposed to complete prior to starting, I racked up some pretty impressive numbers. Pull ups are just about impossible for me due to a shoulder injury, but I'm planning to substitute either the bands or the Lat pull down machines and just keep upping the weight until I build up my shoulders.

Where there's a will, there's a way.

I did about 6wks on it, but didn't really like it. I didn't see changes & I didn't feel challenged at all so I switched to insanity instead.
On both workout regimens I ate/ eat:

Banana smoothies with greens powders
alot of fruit
green salads with avacado/ sprouts/ tomato/ brussel sprouts/ peppers

That's my typical daily diet

Katie P,

Thanks for the info. What didn't you like about the workout?

There were a few things I didn't like.....
I typically get up in the morning to work out so anywhere from 4:30-6:30 I'll start a workout. With P90X the workouts are pretty long & I didn't feel energized after doing them b/c they weren't intense enough. With Insanity It's MUCH shorter & I feel energized b/c my lungs were really pushed & my heart gets a great workout. It's like a night & day difference for me.
I don't mind working out for 1hr or 1 & 1/2 hrs if I'm really working but not if I'm not feeling pushed. Insanity just overall has alot of energy to it from the instructor to the people doing it with them. They ALL are being pushed & you can tell. I didn't really buy the fact that the people on p90x were really sweating that much. That's just my opinion. :)

Hi all.

My husband and I are raw vegans (we don't knowingly eat anything cooked) and have been close to 3 years. We just started the P90x program last night and are very sore this am so I think it will be effective on some level for us.

I would love to chat with anyone who has completed the program as a raw vegan.

Thanks so much,

Michele

I disagree. If you do the p90x correctly, then you will work just as hard. You need all the equipment to really complete p90x like pull-up bar, free weights, yoga mat and bands. I built my own pull-up bar out of wood and a steel bar from home depot as the door frame bar wouldn't work in my apartment. I completed the p90x last year and recently started the insanity and i just don't like it as much. You tell me that doing push-ups and pull-ups for the first p90x disk is not tough. I couldnt do pull-ups when i started the p90x and now i can easily do 15 and 100 push-ups. I prefer p90x but that's cause i like to use free weights more and insanity you don't use none. P90X you gain muscle and insanity you lose weight.

I'm glad there are some people still doing this :)... today is my day 30! I used to be able to do only one pushup and one pull up. Now I can do 3 unassisted pull ups, and 15 pushups! I feel like I am starting to build muscle mass for the first time ever lol! I have high cortisol, so it has been darn near impossible to retain any muscles I worked for. something must finally be right :D
