vitamin C relieves constipation...how?

Can anyone tell me how the vitamin C works to relieve constipation? Does it draw water into the colon? Cause peristalsis?

If you take too much Vit C, your body can't absorb it all as its water soluble so it dumps it into the colon to get rid of it as it is useless
