Hi all,

Anyone else have difficulty with raw beets? They irritate my throat so bad, it feels scratchy and uncomfortable for hours. I love cooked beets, but would really like to make the switch to raw. I just grated about 10 beets or so with the machine (that was before I knew they would bother me) and I don't want them to go to waste. Does anyone know how I can make them a little more palatable?

Thanks,
Silvia

Hm, is it possible there was some mold on them (perhaps not enough to be visible)? That sounds like a mold effect. The raw beets I've eaten haven't had that effect at all. I'm sure you can find some great recipes for the grated beets by searching this forum or looking through a good raw recipe book (do you have Alissa's?). Hope your next taste of beets is better! :)

Hi Julia, I dont think there was any mold. I have 2 batches of beets, one from the store and one from my friends garden, and I have the same problem with both.

I used to love beets. I don't have any bad reactions, but all of a sudden I have no desire to eat them. I am thinking that it is a seasonal thing. I have also read (I think that it was in Green for Life, but don't quote me) that we aren't really supposed to consume root vegetables in large quantities if at all. The sugar source of the plant is in the roots and greens are so much better for us. Just a thought, and I hope that makes sense. GR

Beets can be very cleansing... I know when you juice them you should start out with a little, because they are so cleansing. SO maybe your food is actually doing something good. Try and eat one and see if that bothers you?
