hi there! I'm Therese, crunchy mama to my girls ages 2 and 4. I've always been pretty 'alternative' in my choices of homebirthing and babywearing my girls. Now to add more non-mainstream-ness (not a word, I know!) I have become vegan, and now 75% raw and looking to get to 100%. I never really 'liked' meat, and our family is already dairy-free due to allergies, so it hasn't been very hard to eat vegan for us (well hubby still likes his chicken). Eating raw feels really good to me- yet I cheat a lot- I'll eat raw all day and then mess it up and have a candy bar  so I am really looking for support on making the commitment and sticking with it.

At family gatherings I have actually successfully hid my veganism :( which is sad I know. Pushing food around my plate has worked amazingly- and constantly getting up to help my little ones. I know I need to make the commitment and stop hiding. Yet my in-laws view veganism with much distain... because eating meat and potatoes is AMERICAN and anything else is liberal which is also said with much disgust.

I am afraid that if I am 'outed' I will be scruitinized at every meal, which is something I don't want to happen, therefore its easier for me to stay hidden and feel okay about messing up once in a while.

Anyway, looking for support! Glad to be here!

Welcome! I sure know what you mean about being scrutinized. If my family knew I was doing this, I'd be bombarded with questions, advice, and suggestions, not to mention a lot of tempting cooked food. So when DB visits next month, I'd rather go back to SAD while he's here and not face all that.

This is a great group and you will find lots of support and motivation here. Good luck!

Hey there crunchy mama!

Maybe you could just bring your own recipes to family gatherings that trick people -- like the mock salmon pate or fake tuna. Nothing else really tastes enough like its counterpart, but those are great.

Or just bring a bunch of your own food and keep doing your usual moving meat around your plate but having the other stuff.

Anyways -- welcome, Therese!

I would love to inspire my MIL who just went through her last round of radiation for breast cancer. I got her a juicer and made her juice when I was over her house for her, but she never commited to making it herself. I am already 'out there' as far as they are concerned... I guess one more thing wouldn't be the end of the world.

I live in Southern CA- San Dimas

Thanks for the welcome! I am going to try the mock salmon. I have tried the mock tuna, but I need to fiddle with the recipe some more- I think I put in too much garlic and it overpowered it.

I think that if I am going to commit to this, I am going to HAVE to get better at making more of the fancy raw meals to bring to the in-laws house. Right now my dinner staple is 'sushi' with avocado, cucumber and shredded carrots, and a dash of red pepper wrapped in Nori.

Aloha and Welcome to RFT!!!

I am so happy for you that you have taken the steps you are being led to intuitively.... that is so wonderful....

and I am also very sad for you too..... Families can put so much pressure on us to 'conform' to what THEY say is normal -- or appropriate...
I can only say to you... This is an amazing journey you are on.... and this gift you give to yourself and to your children.... learning about health and eating vibrant foods.... this will not only be a blessing to you - but to your children as well.... through out their lifetime....

so -- you jes keep on keepin on... and you will ALWAYS find support here!

RAWk on!!
