I would do it like this: cut open a mature coconut and cut into pieces (pain in the butt). Then I would just use a box grater (maybe small end) to grate the coconut as if it were a piece of cheese. Is this how you do it or is there an easier method?? I would very much appreciate some tips. Thank you!!

I could be wrong but I can't imagine coconut coming fresh out would be hard enough to shred like that. Methinks it would have to be dehydrated first but then, I purchase mine. I like my life eeeeeeeze!

I just crack mine on the ground.. then grate it.. it probably comes out in about 8 bits of super firm coconut meat. grate it up..it is wonderful!!
I would think you could just throw it into the food processor??.. not sure not done it myself that way before.. but seems a good idea.. then you would need to cut it up a bit for sure!!
Otherwise..I just buy it! (take the armache out of coconut lol)

Coconut meat (mature coconut meat that is) is very hard and stiff, like carrots, I grate mine in the food processor with the grating disc but you could use a manual cheese grater also.
The dried one sold in stores is not raw which is why some of us make it at home to have raw dried coconut.

I crack my coconuts open and then put the pieces in my VitaMix and grind 'em up.

Mine is raw.. I think. Anyway, too much trouble for me to crack and grate. Nice to know about the coconuts though. Thanks. :)

...I do just crack open a mature coconut and peel with peeler...cut and put in the food processor...this makes really nice, fresh, delicious shredded coconut. I can't find it Raw here...stuff they sell at both my health food stores comes in bulk...it is dried and unsweetened, but not raw. Now, I just need to leave it in the food processor long enough to turn into coconut butter...I wonder if it will do this........I also want to try making coconut oil next...I hear it's not too difficult to do...but that is another thread! :p

deberaw, what do you mean by you peel it with a peeler? Do you have a tool for removing the meat easily? I use a knife to break it off bit by bit.
