View Full Version : Which seaweed is good for snacking right out of the bag?

I ordered four different kinds of seaweed recently. I remember buying seaweed in college that I loved to snack on right our of the bag. These, however, seem to need to be soaked... they are really hard to chew or even tear off, otherwise.

What kind of seaweed is edible as a snack without soaking? Thanks in advance!

Dulse. Soft & easy to chew. Very addictive too. ;)

All right, my gigantic order of dulse finally arrived, and I tore into it, so excited... but... it is soooooo salty! :( Normally I like the natural saltiness of sea vegetables even though I can't stand the taste of salt, but this is just way way way too salty. :( I'm so sad, I was hoping to love it!

If you rinse sea veggies really well, can you get rid of any of the salty taste, or since it's natural is it pretty much impossible to minimize the salty flavor?

If not, hopefully the taste will grow on me... I'm thinking this isn't the kind of seaweed I used to snack on after all... what I ate was dark green, and this has purple tinges.

I am a seaweed lover but Dulse is just YUK to me. It tastes so fishy and just off, and I've tried some very good brands of it. I like to snack on nori (not the flat sheets) and also sea palm, which comes in long crunchy pieces.

My friend lives in the area where Dulse is harvested. She says her mom snacks on it right out of the bag. I just couldn't do it. I tried. Couldn't stand the taste or the smell of it.

Glad to hear that I'm not the only one! Also wanted to add that I love Wakame right out of the bag. And for the record, I only use the Rising Tide Sea Vegetable brand for my "snacking seaweeds"...

I like wakame out of the bag. I will also eat nori sheets plain (though they're expensive!)

I only like dulse when used as a salt sub in recipes and I like the flakes sprinkled on my salads.

I like them all. Especially Kombu

Good to know. It's frustrating since I had always loved snacking on seaweed right out of the bag too!

Maybe part of it is that when my shipment arrived, it was HOT... everything had obviously been sitting in a hot truck all day. (In fact I'm going to be posting about that separately.... basically an entire shipment of raw food is no longer raw. :() Maybe that somehow intensified the overly salty flavor at the time.

Does normal dulse have this deep purplish tinge to it? That's one thing I don't remember from my seaweed-snacking days.

If it was green, it was toasted and most likely nori. Toasted and lightly salted nori is amazing stuff. It may not have been nori, but if it was green like you said, I'm 99% sure it was toasted (not raw).

And yea, raw dulse has that nice purple background to it.

Thanks, Snow! I do enjoy nori, but the seaweed I remember had the texture of dulse, rather than being flat... I am going to try to force myself to like dulse because I've got an awful lot of it now! :D (I do like its deep purple color!)

I love eating dulse, as is. Maybe it will grow on you :)

Johnny G,
Where did you buy your WHOLE dulse, not powder or flakes? I love the purple reddish kind that I can throw right in salad and it becomes soft almost instantly. I just looked at rawlife.com, my friend Paul Nison's site and I found he has best prices. He gets seaveg.com stuff too, free ship, so may just order from him. $18.95 pound.

All:
Do you order Whole Dulse and where? Thinking pound as I love it that much and miss it lots too. Thanks.

Looked on ebay and not finding great prices.

Sundance hfs has a bulk jar of crunchy sea weed. I'm not sure what type it is or even if it's raw, but if it turned out to not be raw, I reckon I'll still be munching on it like pototo chips.
