HUMMMMMM, Well, peanuts are EXTREMELY suseptable to aflatoxin a very deadly toxin (virus) soooooo, I don't eat them in any form.

I have heard that MOST, (I can't say all) raw fooders don't either.

Personally, if you try almond butter it is soooooo much creamier and tastier than peanut butter.

And probably the thing you like the most in the peanut butter is all the added salts and sugars, and the roasting part.

As alot of people love roasted tahini but don't like raw, same with nut butters.

You might want to try them though, See if they will send you a small sample to try.

Personally, I've never heard of jungle peanuts yet, if you want some, go for it.

If something states it is raw is "should" be. We don't know who you are dealing with. Best thing to do is found out who the distributor is and ask questions.

I agree with RP about almond butter although I still like and enjoy peanut butter on ocassion.

Peanuts and other nuts and food sources which tend to have "aflatoxin" are rigorously tested by the FDA ~ or so they say. Here is more information about it:

http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/002429.htm
http://www.aflatoxin.info/aflatoxin.asp

It's interesting that peanuts seem to get such a bad rap when so many other foods have aflatoxin also including ~ maize, pearl millet, rice, wheat, soybeans, sunflower, chilies, black pepper, coriander, turmeric AND almonds, pistachio, walnuts, coconut and milk.

For more information ~ google as I did please.

Sooo, whatcha planning on doing for jelly?

thanks for the response on the peanuts. I have almond butter in the fridge now and i use it ALOT but i do like peanut butter. NFL has these peanuts that they say have been tested on that toxin and they have none...apparently they are a strain that comes from the amazon...and they are peanuts but they dont have this problem.
Anyway.... i happen to like raw nuts.... i use to get walnuts that had just fallen off the trees when i lived in northern calif. and eat them straight away before they were dried. they tasted more like a vegatable than a walnut.

as far as the jelly or jam goes. what i was thinking about was trying was to wiz up some strawberries and then maybe add some psyciliam( sorry about my spelling....as a writer i shouldn t have this problem....but HA! i do....it just means i have to use spell check...but not here. i let my hair down here)

anyway.... if that didnt work i think i would dehydrate the strawberries to a dryish state and then wiz them with a bit of water.. in the food processor till they were about the consistancy as jam. that would work well i think...and you would get the intense taste of the berry from the dehydrating process.

i loved peanut butter and strawberry jam....or grape jam on a sandwich.
i make almond butter and bannana sandwiches with flax crackers...and its very good. but... nothing takes the place of that childhood peanut butter and jelly sandwich with a cold glass of milk.

i can do without the 'real' milk....maybe almond milk with a dash of vanilla might make it less like almond milk and more like a tasty companion to the sandwich. i would not want the peanut butter to fight with the almond milk.

i think it would be fun to try it. and... as far as the bread for it.... i have to think about that.... i think if i do buy the peanuts and make peanut butter out of them.... i will make up a special bread for it. i have to give it some thought.

isnt all this fun??? i do love being raw...its cool to adapt things from the cooked world. you never know what you can come up with. Alissa must have had a ball doing her recipes for her cook book.

so...what about the raw valencia peanuts i see in the stores? are they really raw or not... does anyone know?
thanks

The dehydrated strawberries blended with water sounds great! Going to try that one myself... AND I have the perfect machine for making peanut, almond or any other kind of butter I want.

Right now I'm enjoying Caramel coconut cookies with almond milk. SOOOO good! Oh! ..and fudge with almond milk. I Looooovvvve almond milk!

btw ~ you know anyone who's died from aflatoxin? I certainly don't. Enjoy your pb & j!

I have a GREAT jam recipe

1 cup fruit (I prefere strawberries or raspberries)
1 cup raisins

blap in a food processor

let sit for about 2 hours or so in the fridge.

Voile' the raisins absorb some of the liquid inthe fruit, and make the fruit the consistancy of jam, it is soooooo good.

I call this "Exploding Raspberry Jam" when I use raspberries of course, it could also be
Exploding strawberry jam
Exploding Grape jam
Exploding Kiwi jam

Use your imagination.

Also, to make almond milk taste more like the dairy kind,

I make it thicker, I use about 1 1/2 cup almonds (soaked) to 2 1/2 to 3 cups water, then I add just a smallish dash, or maybe a pinch of sea salt, then just one or two dates, but you need to try it to see how YOU like it.

Hope you like my Jam, I certainly do.

Annie, I'm another one who greatly prefers peanut butter. And I know for me it's not the sugar as I have always used Natural peanut butter...but the roasted, not raw kind. I just really like the taste of peanuts.

I have switched to the raw almond butter, and it's good. But, I do miss my natural peanut butter.

Something my husband came up with ~ instead of blending the dehydrated strawberries with water, blend w/ fresh strawberries. If it's not sweet enough, a few drop of agave? Gonna try that one meself. :)

EXCELLENT idea ! the agave would loosen it up and make it sweeter like jam too GREAT!!! i will remember that one !

Jodi... i do like all the nut butters...i have had them all at one time or another but i miss peanut butter the most.
I have still not found anyone that knows if the raw valencia peanuts are really raw or not.... they are the only kind i see labled 'raw'

But.... are they really raw? I guess i am going to have to have to try to find out. i bet i could make them into really nice peanut butter.

I did speak to natures first law today...and they told me that those wild jungle peanuts dont taste exactly like peanuts....they are a close though.
if nothing else... they sound interesting. if i come up with some extra money burning a whole in my pocket...i'll order some and see what kind of intresting nut butter they will make.

my cursed tastebuds get restless and are always looking for something different.
i'll let you know what i find out.

I have bought the raw jungle peanuts from NFL several times and love them. I have tried another brand from the health food store and they were slightly bitter and green tasting. I was told that it is because they need to be raw in order to get the taste we are use to. However with the jungle peanuts they taste like the regular roasted type but they do look different. And they will sprout! (just to make sure they are alive) They are so good I am taking them with me on my 3 week at ail at sea.

I make my own raw strawberry jam by blending fresh strawberries and honey (I use the thick, cloudy, raw honey). It looks runny at first, but sets a little when refrigerated. Yum! :)

I really have a hard time trusting people when they say that something is raw. It should be raw if it says it is....but i usually feel i have to talk to them to get some more information about the product. Of course when i talked to NFL about their stuff....especially the peanuts....they always tell me how fabulous things are. so its good to hear from others...thanks for your post sailaway... i was wondering about them....now i think i will buy some.... sounds like a good thing to have on a 3 week trip !!!

NOPE, don't know ANYONE who has died of aflatoxin or even gotten ill, but then I don't know anyone who died of pnemonia, or lung cancer or a car accident, but it doesn't mean they don't exsist, and aren't harmful.

My cousin died from pneumonia; a close friend died in a car wreck and two of my uncles died from lung cancer and I still don't know anyone who has died from aflatoxin ~ AND since it's in milk and so many drink it....

Didn't say it wasn't harmful ~ just not prevalent ~ yet car accidents, people dying IN HOSPITALS mind you from pneumonia AND people dying from lung cancer ~ is certainly prevalent. These things we read about daily ~ ummm, those who read or watch the news, anyway.

I enjoy peanuts and peanut butter. I also enjoy almonds as many do ~ and it is supposedly present in almonds and pistachios as I've already stated.

Enough said.

Apricot Jam from Living on Live Food by Alissa Cohen

A wonderful jam to use on muffins and breads.

2 cups dried apricots, soaked
1 cup strawberries

In a food processor, blend apricots and strawberries until smooth and creamy.

Oh, Alissa,

This is another good one, from my book

Exploding Raspberry Jam

1 cup raspberries
1 cup raisins

Blend in a food processor,

let sit in the frige and it will firm up, this is wonderful.

Thanks, Alissa, for the reminder of your recipe. This is yet another reason to buy those lucious strawberries while they're still in season. IF they don't all just get eaten straight from the carton!

Now I'll have a reason to finally make the banana flax crackers -- almond butter & jam sandwiches.

And ... I don't know a thing about aflatoxin. :D

Alissa

HA! I like that name!
Yeah, i think if you use the fresh fruit PLUS the dried, thatÂ’s what makes it thick and jam like. otherwise honey and agave and the like will keep if fairly thinned out still

totally cool...thanks Alissa.... anything to further the cause of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches ...

and by the way... your mashed potatoes make great french fries when dehydrated.... at least i liked them !!!
