Hi all,

I had my usual green smoothie with spirulina today. Then my heart rate went up to 100 from its usual 60-70. I then got nauseated and had a few dry heaves.:( I had to take some medicine and then it went away. I hate to do that but I hate vomiting.

Anyone else have this experience?

Thanks,
June

Was this your first time using the spirulina? What brand did you use, do you think it could have gone bad?

I have never experienced this.

I am thinking though, that if your body wanted to purge something out, you should let it.

I hope you get some answers though, I'm sorry you got sick!

I experimented with spirulina a couple of years ago. I got the opposite affect. I'd get abnormally sleepy and tired after I consumed it, which I associate as an intolerance to the product. Someone tried to tell me it was detoxing but I disagree. Maybe I'll get a little out of bulk at the HFS some time and experiment again and see if my body could use it now. Just goes to show everyone's different.

Okay...so a couple of months ago my Mom bought me a huge bottle of Spirulina, I was so excited to try it in smoothies etc... but then I read this thread along with hearing from others about the possible negative side effects.

I have heard that if I take to much...say more than a tablespoon, it might cause nausea, dizziness, fatigue, heart palpitations etc...

Now I have become a nervous nelly....my poor little bottle of Spirulina just sits in my fridge staring at me. :D

Is there a certain amount that I should use?? I absolutely do not want to feel funky after taking it. Is that common with Spirulina?

Any advice?

I have used spirulina in my smoothies, but I usually use about half a tablespoon~~usually not more than a TBLS~~and it has been okay with me. After reading above though, don't think I am going to exceed that amount. I also don't use it every day.

Please be careful of the source you get spirulina from (same with chlorella). This is one area where you need to get it organic/wildcrafted and from a good, reliable source. There shouldn't be negative effects from it other than maybe slight detox. But if you start out with a small amount like 1/4 tsp and work your way up, you should be fine. I've never had any problems with any green supplements, in any quantity even before raw.

I have a tablespoon of spirulina every morning, sometimes twice a day, and I have never noticed any of these side effects. I always mixed it with chlorella, lemon juice and water. Sorry you got sick :(

I started taking it when I first went 100% raw and had gone through some detox but kept doing the same thing not realizing that maybe it could have been an intolerance to these products??
Anyways either it was and my body got use to it or it was detox...

My guess is detox :)

I just started taking it - I only use a round teaspoon added to my smoothie (I am not used to the swamp like taste) and have had no problems.

I get mine from here:

I use it in smoothies as well, and have had no problems whatsover. I better not exceed the dose having heard that!

What are the benefits of spirulina?

among other things:

spirulina is a whole food with the world's highest known source of complete protein, containing all 8 essential amino acids (& 10 of the 12 non-essential ones). Spirulina yields 20 times more protein per acre than soybeans & consists of 70% protein (compared to beef's 22%). Spirulina is a significant source of vitamin b-12 & contains vitamins a, e, k, b-complex, potassium, calcium, magnesium, zinc, selenium, phosphorous, & iron. Spirulina provides other minerals, trace minerals, cell salts, phytonutrients, enzymes, an abundance of chlorophyll & other beneficial pigments. Spirulina is alkaline & helps balance your body's ph.

I don't remember if I had that trouble with spirulina, but I just got some E3Live Brain On and I get chest pains like when I drank coffee. They are both algae like stuff aren't they. Maybe a connection.

So, I've started using this again with good success: I'm feeling a distinct boost to my enery and a positive impact on my mood.

Yes, I periodically use chlorella, spirulina and E3 Live. Not every day and not together. Oh do I recommend them!

Any reason why you don't use them together.. or every day?
I use both spirulina and chlorella every day and together and i've never read anything about not mixing the two or not having them every day..
Do you know something I don't ? :o

I had a problem with E3Live in liquid form. I had face flushes on the order of a niacin flush and I was told to discontinue it. Prior to the liquid, I took it in capsule form and had no problems.
