View Full Version : Why do we need a lot of greens?
Why are greens so emphasized in a raw diet? What's the big deal about greens, anyway? Why isn't the focus more on fruit?
Just curious!

In general, fruits are the best source of vitamins on the plnet. Leafy greans are the best source of needed minerals.

Why do you think the focus should be more on fruit?
Just curious.

Like BlazinJane said, greens are a very good source of minerals.
They also have a different array of antioxidants than many fruits, and add nutrients without a huge sugar injection.

Probably because I eat a lot of fruit, and I'm biased. :o
I was just wondering what greens have, that fruit doesn't have. I've been eating more greens again lately, and feel so satisfied afterwards.

I agree about the fruit. I eat one heckuva lot of it in summer; more greens in the colder times.
Greens are powerful and I can tell when I'm not getting enough.

How do you feel when you're not getting enough greens?

For me, it's more about my cuticles and my bowel movements. The greens keep me regular and my cuticles stay cute. :D

I feel less balanced, more sugary and bingey. I end up craving sweets and nuts and raw 'goodies' or raw 'junk' all day (ie. raw desserts and dehydrated foods), and even begin to crave raw desserts over whole fruits. To me, these foods are fine in moderation, but not as a pattern. When I eat more greens, I crave salads, raw vegetables, raw fruits, my skin glows, I feel better about myself, healthier, and my teeth dont hurt (when I keep the fruit consumption moderately low in percentage). I think greens are one of the healthiest foods on the planet, personally... They may not be the most pleasurable of foods, but in my humble opinion, I think one of the human's greatest problems is hedonism and looking for the easy way out, the pleasure... When really, what we need to realize is that true, lasting, deserved pleasure must be worked for, and there are generally sacrifices one must make before they attain that. ... That's just my two cents though!!

Yes, greens are the best thing in the world for regularity!! It never fails. I'll have to take note of the difference I see in my cuticles :)

Hey, just wanted to comment on the suggestion about reading Victoria Boutenko's book Green for Life. Absolutely. And if anyone doesn't have the money to buy it, if your library doesn't have it, see if they'll either buy it or do interlibrary loan. Thanks to inter-library loan, I've gotten my hands on every books on the topic of raw veganism that my heart's desired.
