These are SO yuck... I had a slip up, ate an entire 10ounce package of sugar free Licorice. The sweetner is Malitol...... umm, it's very very mean stuff.
I'm tired of playing the game of having my cake and eating it, too. Concerning the licorice, that is, and it's the only slip up I've had in many moons.
This is a warning that artficial sweetners give a laxative effect in small amounts. Believe me, it's not worth it, even if Licorice Root is good for you
Question, how can I get my colon to calm down now????:( I didn't have just a SMALL amount, but the entire package!!
Thank you very very much for any input ahead of time.

You just have to wait until it's all out of your system. I won't touch sugar alcohols for that reason.

In doing all this research for my diabetes I came across a couple of interesting facts, artificial sweeteners are the worst thing you can do. The sugar alcohols will give you severe stomach distress if you eat more than the recommended serving. And sometimes even if that is all you eat. On the whole, artificial sweeteners don't help you lose weight, in fact in some studies they have caused weight gain. The chemicals are not safe and can be addictive as is the case with diet sodas. They are just not good for you. If I want a chocolate bar, I am far better off just eating a regular candy bar than one with artificial sweetener. Course now I look for raw alternatives. It is hard when you crave something like licorice. Have you tried licorice tea? I know, its not raw, but a better alternative to licorice with artificial sweeteners.

I'm a diabetic and most of us know to avoid these things. Unfortunately the people who market these things prey on our well meaning friends and family. They buy the stuff for us, thinking they are doing us a favor.

Ugh, I learned the same hard lesson a few weeks ago when I mistakenly bought some supposedly organic maltitol dark chocolate (this was before I decided to go raw). FYI, I am NEVER gassy. Never. I've been eating raw broccoli, beans, etc. my whole life (well... I obviously don't eat cooked beans any more, but you get the idea) and my digestive system just handles it, does its job, no gas to speak of... but um... after that chocolate I felt like I had taken an entire bottle of laxatives.
NEVER AGAIN!!!! Good lesson learned though, eh?

You can make great sweets with stevia. Even "chocolate" with lots of cocoa, and coconut oil (virgin if you like the taste). My favorite stevia brand is NOW...but now that I am almost 100% raw, I am not afraid of using raisins or dates to sweeten things because I see that I am able to remain thin eating this way (Praise God!). Also the longer I am raw, the more my favorite sweets are fresh fruits like pineapple and watermelon. If you are craving a sweet splurge try letting yourself eat as much of your favorite fruit as you'd like. I used to be afraid to eat more than one banana but those days are over :-)
Hope your GI is all better now! We have all made those mistakes

I got really lucky, the herb store I went to had fresh dried stevia, so I bought a baggie. It was $1.90 for 2 oz. Great to add to things I want sweetened and if the little flakes are too much I always have agave. No more artificial sweeteners for me!

Oh, my goodness, thanks for all the replies, everyone is so  !
Today it's mostly out of my system, just a headache to deal with.
no more artificial sweetners, ever. Not even in the gum my Dentist told me to chew.
Heck, even xylitol is a sugar alchol.
