I saw a thread that talked about making your own mustard. I don't get what's wrong with just using prepared mustard???

There's nothing "wrong" with using prepared mustard, it's just not raw. So it really depends on just how strict you want to be.

It's got cooked vinegar in it, and often MSG or other chemicals.

oh, thanks. I didn't know vinegar is cooked. ACV isn't tho, right. So are you saying the vinegar is cooked, but the rest is just mixed and put in bottles, cold?

It's not prepared 'cold'...at least not the commercial stuff...so it's not only the ingredients...but the whole shabang is more than likely pasteurized upon bottling/jarring. So, if you're using say, Frenchs mustard, then it's just not raw, period as most (if not all) commercial, prepared stuff is pasteurized.
I don't know if any companies make a 'raw' version and bottle/jar it or not.
But as it was mentioned by lytlsprout, it all depends on how "strict" you are in your own, personal raw diet. So, if you're gonna go for the prepared stuff, I'd say at very least make sure it's the more "natural" kind like what you'd find in a natural food store, co-op, etc. so there won't be added chemicals such as MSG.

Thanks. I've been making this homemade Honey-Mustard dressing with raw honey that the kids can't seem to get enough of. I thought it was raw. BUMMER!

Zaphirah,
You can probably make something just as good using honey and dried mustard powder.

....and about the vinegar, it's not raw either unless you buy Bragg's raw apple cider vinegar. I don't know of another company that makes it raw.
