I was reading reviews for maca on another site and someone said the taste and smell was awful. I was thinking about getting some to put in smoothies, but I'm afraid it'll overpower my smoothies with disgusting flavor. What do you think of maca? Do you think it'll ruin my smoothies?

I didn't care for the taste that much and will be tossing my bag of maca. But you can try just a little bit and see if you can tolerate it. Everybody is different.

Tossing your bag? That's like sacraligeous!!! Or however you spell it!!!
I think it has an Earthy taste to it. I put it in my GS's and it does not overpower them.

I don't care for maca alone or in GS (don't hurt me Lucy! )

But I DO like it when I make shakes! To me, in a vanilla or chocolate shake, it gives it a flavor as if it were an old fashioned malt. So, in those items, I can tolerate it and actually if I make a shake without the maca, it seems to have something missing. But otherwise, I'm not all that fond of the taste either.

Oh...also works in that Super Candy recipe (just do a search in the recipe section for "super candy") or go to www.goneraw.com for the recipe.

I like it in shakes as well. Goes really well with chocolate and banana.

I was on this for a little while before I increased my percentage of raw foods, so I was doing it in a bit of hot water like a hot malty drink. I tried it in smoothies, but to me it was overpowering on the fruit. Maybe in a green smoothie it would be different. I was actually liking the maca and felt really good on it, until one day I got diarrhea of it when I had gotten a new batch(maybe it was just a bad batch - I had bought it from the bulk jar at our co-op)whereas the other stuff I had gotten in a bottle. So I haven't done any since that episode. I saw someone else had had digestive reactions to maca as well. I'd be willing to try again though as it's been some time.

Depending on the quality maca you get, the taste will be different. I use navitas maca and I love it. It tastes malty/caramelly/peanut buttery/a little bit bitter. I think it goes beautifully with cacao.
Is it pricey - yes! But you only need to use a little bit, so it lasts a long time.
I've bought normal maca powder before, that didn't specify that it was raw, and it tasted terrible and gave me an upset tummy. So definitely get quality, quality when it comes to maca.

I've only had it as a tea blend, and it's earthy and aromatic. I kind of like it.

Ditto what rawstrength said.it goes great w/cacao in shakes especially.I mix almond mylk, frozen banana, cacao, maca, fo-ti, vanilla and a dash of sea salt..it is thick and amazing...you can add a bit of ice too to make it more like a frapachino (sp?).......I put it in avo/cacao pudding too. I use Navitas brand also.

Navitas was actually the brand that I read reviews for. I think I'll try some in a shake with cacao. Hopefully, it'll turn out yummy that way, or at least decent tasting.

Noooooooooo.

I like it with raw cacao and coconut water, a tiny tiny amount. I've tried it in smoothies, but even in a small amount, the smell makes me completely nauseous and not want to drink anymore of it. I've lost 2 giant smoothies trying to drink it.

My boyfriend, though, drank both of those smoothies and could not tell it was even in there, so I guess it's totally individual by individual thing.

I'd also recommend starting with the cacao, though... From what I hear, blended "milk"shakes are the most common way for even people like me to get a little in their system periodically!

In stuff it's fine. By itself, not so much.

The taste doesn't bother me but, whenever I"ve put in my GS I feel weird....hyper. Does anyone else get these kind of effects?

I like that malty peanut buttery taste, I can even eat it alone by the spoonful!

I like it best in chocolate and banana type smoothies as others have said, the malty taste reminds me of my childhood milkshakes.

Geez - I have never even noticed a taste to it when I throw it in the GS. Maybe cause I only use a teaspoon of it???

I love the malty flavor too! Definately in banana chocolate or coconut smoothies.

I bought maca once. The only way I could stand to eat it was in this refrigerator bread I invented, which was sort of a vegetable and herb bread. Can't stand it in smoothies or other recipes; in my mind it ruins them. I couldn't wait to get through the bag....and I haven't bought it again since then.

I LOVE the taste, but maybe I just need it badly. I find it delicious, especially mixed with carob or chocolate...I do the Raw Supercandy with carob and it's oh so good!!

I got my maca and cacao today and had it in a banana smoothie with some hemp seeds. I used 2 frozen bananas, a cup of water, 1/2 teaspoon of maca, 1 tablespoon of cacao, and 1 tablespoon of hemp seeds. It didn't seem like I could taste the maca very much. My smoothie tasted kinda tangy like yogurt. It was good, but I would've preferred it a little sweeter. I'll probably add a little agave next time I make it.

I upped the maca to a full teaspoon in my smoothie today. I tasted that malty taste that some of you were talking about and it was soooo good. I made it a little differently today. I used one banana and 3/4 cup of water and added a teaspoon of agave, but kept everything else the same. I like it that way the best.

I LOOOOOOOVE maca! I just got the maca Mindi was going to toss (Thanks, Mindi!) & it's even better than the stuff I was getting at my local herb shop. I think it has something to do with it being organic or something because I don't think the stuff I got was organic, though it was raw. Organic stuff always tastes better to me. But yeah, I definitely love the taste of maca... ;)

Hi everyone! I'm new.

I love maca. http://www.longhaircareforum.com/forums/images/smilies/love2.gif I won't drink cacao smoothies without it, but a few hours after drinking it I feel sort of sedated. Not sleepy just very relaxed. I had to stop drinking it at work.

I just made a great smoothie with maca. It tasted like a chocolate malt. I added a little cinnamon too.
