I purchased a box planter to plant vegetables in, but found out that they spray all around these apartments on a regular basis, so I planted flowers in it instead. Then I found a salad plant at the local farmers market, purchased it, put it outside to get some sun, and noticed it looked rather wilted. I brought it inside and a swarm of knat type insects which were hidden in the bottom of the plant came flying out. Anyone know of a natural insecticide to get rid of them or a repellant to drive them away?

but wouldn't more simply hatch in the bag and fly out? :D

i'm starting to become more humane with the insects...used to be very afraid of spiders...now I can scoop them up with a broom and put them outside

i did this with a huge blow fly the other day which was flying around like mad in the kitchen. i somehow got it to fly out the door and it seemed happy to be outside and so was i! i don't have the strength in me anymore to kill bugs or any other living thing.

okay so some bugs you have to still get rid of...:p

place some apple cider vinegar in a shallow jar with a plastic wrap over the top...a small hole punched in the top. you can use a plastic lid too. they can get in, but they can't get out

maybe there's a better insect repellant recommendation

I can't give you a name but I have seen books that have natural bug sprays that you can make on your own.

Rawheaven:
I read about doing that for fruit flies...using small piece of cut up banana.

Banana works with fruit flies and most flying insects. Anything sweet, fruity and rotting they like I think. ACV seems to drown them. Oh that sounds awful, but maybe it's better they don't suffer as long.

You're welcome raweyes. Hope whatever you use works. Please share any natural repellants if you find them. Thanks!!

If it's just a fruit fly then it'll likely go away once the overripe or rotting produce is gone so you'll be okay. No need to make traps that would likely attract even more insects or use sprays that have ingrediants that we cannot pronounce.
