View Full Version : Can you use beets or sweet potatoes in smoothies?

I've got some beets and a huge sweet potato that I really need to use today while they're still good.

I've already used the greens of the beets in a smoothie. Can I use the roots too? by chopping etc. first? (I do NOT have a Vita-mix, but my blender does a fine job blending things.) Or should I run it through my juicer first, then pour both the juice and the pulp into the blender?

Or how else do people consume raw beets and sweet potatoes? I was thinking of maybe trying a raw soup, but since I don't have time to experiment today I was thinking a smoothie would just be easier.

Thanks in advance!

BTW, I will also be using the leaves from my "other" sweet potato (the one that started sprouting) in a smoothie today too... we shall see how that goes!!

i've added fresh beet juice to smoothies and it's really yummy-never tried adding the pulp.

i've never thought of adding whole beets or sweet potatos to my smoothies-soups, sure.

i don't do much with sweet potatos these days. i do like to add shredded or thinly sliced beets to my salads.

I juice my beets and use the juice in smoothies. Then the pulp I dehydrate and use the power (after grinding) in either ice cream for color or my smoothies... And too I rarely eat sweet potatoes anymore. Tried dehydrating them, but really don't care for them...you could probably juice them and use the juice.

Vegan,
Thanks for your wisdom. I would never have thought beets in smoothies, but hey if it's good enough for you, then me too. Those orange ones are great.

Great, thank you! I'm eating a sweet potato every few days for specific fertility-related nutritional reasons, otherwise I wouldn't bother with them. (Although, the one thing I know I'd like to try if I ever get a dehydrator is sweet potato chips!)

Thank you again for all the responses!

You can make a yummy juice from the sweet potato.

Try 1 sweet potato, 2-3 apples, and a dash of cinnamon and nutmeg. It really does taste like apple pie.

Eve - YUMMMMM!!!!!!!!! That sounds delish (and it will help me get my cinnamon serving in -- trying to consume a lot of that to help with possible insulin issues). So you run all that through the juicer rather than the blender I take it? Can't wait to try this....

Yeppers, run the potato and apples right through the juicer. Stir in the cinnamon and nutmeg afterwards. All it takes. Sweet and frothy and lovely.
