Not exactly sure what your question is about it? My mom has been on synthroid since I was little. No issues with it that I am aware of. She is a petite little lady. I would think that if your thyroid gland is out of whack, you need to be on the meds?

I've been on synthroid for about 10 years now. Over that time the dosage has been increased just a little. What would you like to know?

Synthroid didn't work for me at all. It relies on the principle that the body is able to convert T4 (the hormone found in Synthroid) to T3, the active hormone that your cells need to function at their best. I think very few hypothyroid individuals have this ability, and keep in mind that a healthy thyroid produces both T4 and T3, as well as T1, T2, and calcitonin.
I currently take synthetic T3 (Liothyronine) and I notice a huge difference, especially mentally. I am hoping that being completely raw will eventually improve my condition enough to drop the meds.
I don't know about the medications, but here is what I know about food off the top of my head:
Selenium deficiency is related to thyroid issues.
Sea vegetables are great for thyroid function. I've read this in a book about healing with food and also remember that Lucy (veganforlife) uses a lot of sea veggies in her green smoothies and has healed thyroid problems.

Yes, I take the generic for synthroid for hypothyroidism. The synthroid is supposed to normalize your hormones, which should make it easier to lose weight. When I eat 100% raw and exercise, I don't have problems losing weight. Actually, I've lost weight simply by eating raw. It also helps that you're very young--not sure if this is what you wanted to know about but you mentioned wanting to fit into a wedding dress

I take Armour thyroid. I just realized it is not vegan, so that might be a concern for you and you might prefer a synthetic. I agree that the T3 is very important for effectiveness. I have been both very thin and average weight in my life and it never had anything to do with my thyroid (I think). Because when thyroid goes down, so does appetite and vice versa. So if you don't need it and take it, it will make you hungrier as it gives you more energy.
I am hoping that as I am raw longer, my need (as reflected in blood T3/4 levels) will decrease.
Brazil nuts are a rich source of selenium. You only need 1-2 per day.

Take kelp tablets instead! Kelp is good for thyroid conditions.

Why are you taking it? I've been taking it since 1987. Not because I'm hyper or hypo thyroid. I'm taking it because of cysts that form on my thyroid gland making me look like I've got a goiter! I get routine tests to see how I'm metabolizing it. My last test has me cutting down on how much I take. Does that answer your question?

what side effects did you have?
does the sythroid help you feel better?
are you still able to lose weight, or will the synthroid help the weight loss?
sorry for so many questions- this is all so new to me...

I'm taking it for a hypo thyroid, my tsh levels were really high... it helps knowing that I'm not the only one on this medicine and others have thyroid issues too

When this all first started (years ago) it was pretty overwhelming to me. Now I look back on it and wonder what all the fuss was about. Anything new like this for you, is going to be different. Nothing to freak out about though. I take a very small dose of synthroid to keep the cysts at bay! The did a scan on me early on and i got to see what my thyroid looked like ... all sorts of cysts:eek: hiding here, there and everywhere. The doctors had to do an FNA on me a couple of times to drain the fluid. Now THAT felt wierd .... but good in a strange sort of way.
So, as I said before, I'll have to take medication the rest of my life, unless some miracle happens. For me its not a big deal. I know some other people that have thyroid issues. But that would get long winded here, if you want more information send me a note.
You'll be fine, not to worry!;)

I have hypothyroidism. It runs through the maternal side of my family. I was diagnosed 10 years ago. I started on Armour Thyroid instead of synthroid because I was told it was more natural. I never knew it came from pigs and can cause severe toxicity. Once I found out about the Armour Thyroid I switched to Levothyroxine (synthroid).
Being on the synthroid helped a lot with the exhaustion I was feeling.
BUT nothing has helped my exhaustion like being 100% raw!
I have endless amounts of energy and as you can see below, I have lost 110 pounds. Like Lucy (veganforlife) I do a lot of sea veggies and green smoothies....on a daily basis actually. AND although my thyroid in not yet healed like hers, obviously with the endless amounts of energy and huge weightloss that I have had the sea veggies and green smoothies must be working! I am eating 500-700 calories more a day than I was before raw and I dropped that 110 pounds in just 6 months!!!
So, for me, raw is the only way to stay healthy, happy and fat free...:D
Best of luck to you!

*No side effects.
*I feel lots better with the levothyroxin.
*I don't need to really lose any weight now. However, I remember years ago my mom was put on Synthroid because of hypothyroid, and I hadn't seen her in about 6 months, when I did see her she had lost alot of weight and looked skinny, so I guess it does that to some people.
If you are diagnosed with hypothyroid, and you really are feeling just not right, I believe you should try taking the synthroid and see how you feel, but I wouldn't take it as a way to lose weight. Lots of exercise and good low-fat raw vegan diet is the best thing for weight loss.

I take Armour, it contains T4 and T3, along with T1, T2 and calcitonin (which are not in synethic meds!)

my doc didn't mention anything about T3 or T4... I'll ask him about those when I see him next, thanks for the help!

What Is Armour Thyroid?
ArmourŪ Thyroid (thyroid USP) is a prescription thyroid medication. It is considered to be a "natural" product, since it is made from thyroid glands of pigs.
What the fruit???

Yes, that sounds awful, especially for vegans. However, it is a much more reliable source, so I am told, as the synthroid, being synthetic, can come from a variety of sources and from a variety of countries. Armour T is more controlled. Therefor, the synthetic doseage can be ever-so-slightly off from rx to rx. If you happen to be a sensitive person to that sort of thing, it can really throw you off. I really was affected (or not, as the case was) to the point that I tried going of thyroid meds alltogether (being raw, and seeing others do it I was hopeful) For *me*, my thyroid got MUCH worse. Typically (and I know there are people here who are exceptions to the rule :D ) Thyroid conditions do NOT get better without treatment. I am ok with that. I am an avid GS drinker and raw foodie and it didn't work out for me. Simply *my* experience and I am ok with that. Raw has SO many benefits that I am willing to accept for me it didn't 'cure' everything. :)
