Exotic Superfoods in New York advertised a durian party. They also had a shipment of organic young coconuts which arrived overnight from Thailand. I picked up a few coconuts (much smaller than the typical Thai coconuts) and a package of fresh durian pieces. I put the package in my car and after awhile realized that my vehicle was permeated with the smell of durian, which took me awhile to recognize. I didn't find it unpleasant but the smell was certainly strong.
I wanted to savor the durian when I was very hungry and decided to bring it to work. Although I worked yesteday, whent the office was empty, I didn't eat the durian and finally got to try it this morning. Immediately, my co-workers started wondering what the smell was. Most didn't find it objectionable but one woman was ready to call the Fire Department!
Anyway, I thought it was delicious. What have your experiences been?

I think it's a love or hate relationship. I absolutely hated it. the smell and the taste. I tried it more than once and one of those time was organic. Then I know many that absolutely LOVE the durian.

I didn't like the smell. Since I couldn't get past the smell I can't say it's nasty but with the smell it's digusting to me. I will try it again though, one day.

wow, you are a brave woman to take durian to work with you :) sounds like your coworker's reactions were pretty mild, though.
my two durian experiences have been a little intense-i don't take too well to the smell either, but gotta tell ya, it's growing on me...i think i may become a durian addict soon enough :)

I love Durian, mmmm.
I left some in my apartment just for a couple of hours, I could plainly smell it when I came off the elevator and my apartment is waaaay down the hall and around the corner.
Wow you have great coworkers LOL

.... well... durian... what can be said about durian..... lol!!! ;) I really want to like it... I always make a point to try it when it is offered to me... I just cannot get past the smell... A couple of times have been able to enjoy a hint of flavor -- here and there ... there's a very pleasant kinda banana'eee after taste ... I think if I keep trying it - eventually I will acquire a taste for it... that's how my parents got me to eat mushrooms and tomatoes which I now love....
I'll keep trying... but --- NO WAY will I allow it in my house!! aaaccckkkk... http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii159/stampincanada/Occassionals/Smileys%20and%20Stuff/didisaythat.gif

I've only had one, but I absolutley love durian! I was in the student lounge at school drinking a mango, ginger, durian smoothie. People at the other tables were trying to figure out what the smell was, and where it was coming from. :D

I'm dying to try it!! I guess I'll have to drive over to Berkeley Bowl and see if its available. My store managers wife works there and he has mentioned that if I want to have a tour let him know in advance so he can make sure I get the private tour of the place. (Wonder if that includes SAMPLES???:D ) I hear its quite the produce market!!
And Starfire .............. you are too funny!!

I was in NYC and stopped at a raw restaurant, Bonobos- the food was fabulous. I decided to get a dish of frozen durian to go. I was on the long island railroad on a crowded train when I opened my frozen durian. As I was enjoying my dessert, I couldn't help but notice the strange sweaty body odor of the gentleman next to me. After a few stops and the train began emptying I was able to get find another seat and I was quite shocked when I discovered the smell followed me!

I don't know about juicing it, it's very creamy and dense. You could put it in a smoothie or make a pudding. I bought it already cut up. Perhaps this weekend I'll purchase an entire durian and try my hand at opening it. How do you know if it's ripe?

I bought one once. Didn't get to try it. It smelled so bad I thought it was rotten. Have since heard it tastes like (rotten) onion and garlic pudding.
Saw that character on the Food Network who eats all those disgusting things try one. He gagged and couldn't swallow it. (Of course, I would gag on just about everything he eats.)
Still...I would like to try durian. Saw a fresh, whole one in a store about a month ago. $8.99 a pound. Weighed almost 3 pounds. Decided not to try it.

There's no way I would bring it to work! It's so disgusting. I really want to try it but haven't been able to deal with the smell.
My mom bought some at Rawvolution (first time) and then we stopped at my apt. She put it in the fridge and we opened it a few times to get out water and we started smelling something awful. I opened the windows and it didn't help. We went outside and could smell it around the front of my apt. but couldn't figure out what it was. It was stronger in the hallway and the kitchen. I was sniffing behind the dryer and the stove. I got a tad nervous and we both thought it was a gas leak. We discussed calling the FD or gas co. I decided to call the gas co. and was calling information for the number. She opened the fridge to get some more water when she figured out it was the durian. I was so happy that we figured out it was the durian before the gas co. or FD showed up.
My mom said it tasted good but I just couldn't try it. I won't allow it in my apt. as it makes my stomach turn. My local health food store sells it and it sits next to other packaged raw food and I have to hold my breath to grab the other food and then get out of the section. That stuff is rank!!!
