I just had the biggest discovery- i found a new dehydrator in the house i live in!!!!!! it was somewhere in the basement..it's a cheap plastic round one, but i'm soooooo happy! i'm making sweet potato chips now AND LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE THEEEEEEEEEMMMM!!!
i just don't know if its actually "cooking" my food- what would a temperature be like in a dehydrator like that (they sell it in Target and Wal-Mart)... it says "Food Dehydrator by Mr. Coffee"
I definitely will get an excalibur (i feel like my food smells like plastic in this one!)
So yea, basically- does anyone have a similar dehydrator and do you know what temperature it has??
THANKS!

stick a meat thermometer in it and turn it on!!
Wow that's like discovering a treasure!!! And maybe the smell will leave after its been run a few times... cuz after all the excaliburs are made of plastic...
MEGA COOL!!! A house with treasures!!! talk about score!!!

YAAAYY!
A freebie!
I have a round dehydrator, but mine has an adjustable temperature dial. I'm assuming yours is not one that the temp can be adjusted on? And the plasticy smell does go away, I thoroughly washed mine in a gentle detergent before using it and there wasn't too much of a smell.
But still... what a find, wish my storage area had treasures such as that.
Happy dehydrating! :D

I had one of these. I downloaded the manual and contacted the company to determine the temperature.
Neither one resulted in any true figures.
However, I did read in Serene Allison's Raw Food cookbook that most dehydrators without a temperature control were set around 160 degrees - YIKES.
I would suggest checking with the thermometer - could be that it's okay.
But, save for an Excalibur - wow, what a difference! My Blonde Macaroons aren't as toasty on the outside - but I'm sure they are not 'cooked' like they might have been before.
Good luck!

Definitely check the temperature...I have a Nesco American Harvest (Christmas present, usable until I get Uncle Sam's tax rebate and I can buy my Excalibur:D ). My dehydrator has a temp. dial and even when I set it at the lowest setting (95 degrees) my flax cracker batter almost burns me when I touch it after it being in there for a few hours so I'm pretty sure a few of my batches have been "cooked". Now I make sure to leave a few empty trays on the top and put my dehydrating food on the bottom trays where it stays cooler. Good luck with your find!

Definitely not in the case with my dehydrator...the hot air blows from the top and blasts the top tray continuously with hot air

I got one from Freecycle. No brand listed on it, no nothing so I just stuck an oven themomitor in it and it whatever I had it on was at 110 degrees.
