View Full Version : Dates vs honey in recipes.
I was wondering if honey can be substituted for dates in recipes as the sweetener? The only dates I can find in my immediate area are the regular brands in the grocery store. I am not sure they are raw. (does anyone know?)
I don't have any problems finding raw honey. If it an be substituted..how do you do it? For instance...a bread recipe I want to try calls for 1/2 cup of pitted, soaked dates. How much honey would I use?
Thanks, Jodi

I think you could substitute honey ,unless the dates are used for texture (like in the date-nut torte) ,then it wouldnt work. You mifht try using REALLY raw ,unfiltered honey (the thick off-white stuff) ,it would mimic dates a bit more than regular raw honey, also have you considered raisins or figs?
As for the "is it raw" question , I dont know - usually they dry ON the tree, but thats not to say that they dont follow up with extra heat treatments , but usually its safe to say that they are raw , and sometimes sulphured.....bittom line you cant KNOW FOR SURE unless it says "living" or "raw"
