View Full Version : Going to a wedding this weekend / to drink or not to drink
It's out of state, and I'll be somebody's guest. I'm only a few weeks raw, but dedicated to it.
I don't think I'll have a problem not eating cooked foods, I already have a plan for that. The biggest hurdle I forsee is not drinking. I have yet to be at a wedding in my 32 years that I have not enjoyed numerous glasses of wine.
Though part of me would like ONE glass of red wine, I also am concerned about the effects of alcohol on my now relatively pure system.
Any advice on this? Pep talks? Encouragement to not imbibe? Or... on the other hand... any first hand experience drinking while raw? It is really detrimental, or is moderation okay?
(On a side note, I've posted a few times here in the past few days. Hope I'm not over-doing it... I'm just excited to have found this forum!)
thanks, joya

why not try experiencing not drinking at the wedding, not only for health reasons, but also because it sounds like you're quite used to drinking at weddings-it would give you a whole new experience and perspective. it might require some discipline, yes, but i am sure you can handle it. youre a raw foodist-high on life! have a good time, either way :)

Alcohol is a toxin and can be detrimental wether RAW or not. Don't do it.
Also consider what effect it is that you are trying to get from the consumption.
If you are one of those social/ occassional drinkers that says it has no effect, then why bother? Have some water instead.
If you acknowledge that there is an effect; relaxation, lowered inhibition, table dancing, the "chill" feeling, or just making a spectacle of yourself. Then ask yourself:
Why are you seeking that effect?
Could you get the same effect from lets say yoga, scuba diving or running?
Do you like how you feel the next day?
Will you be able to negotiate avoiding cooked foods once you have a glass or two of wine in your system?
What will you have to gain from consuming 1, 2 or 3 glasses of wine?
If it's about social acceptance. Then consider the crowd. Consider how you choose friends and consider what it is about you that you like others to value in you when they say you are their friend.

Honor your body and your hard work.
and my guess is, after a glass or 2 of wine, the cooked food will begin to look pretty darn good.
There are a few people here who have been raw/high raw and drank a small amt of alcohol and reported that it made the SICK SICK SICK.
So just honor your body, your hard work, and your new life. :)

There's your answer ~ or part of it anyway. Alcohol in any measure is poison. What you have to ask yourself is, what's your intent with being raw? If it's for health, then why would you intentionally put a toxin in your body?
The others gave great answers here.

RawFAD... Raw Friends Against Drinking
Hi LifeAGift. :)
You know, if I'm honest with myself... I admit I do have a concern that I won't be as fun to be with when I'm not drinking / smoking "green"... two of which I have recently eliminated completely from my lifestyle. I guess this is the true test.
You're absolutely right. The effect for me with this is the notion that "being altered makes things more interesting." Though I know that this mindset doesn't serve my highest good.
Well... here goes... the Pure Life. It will be a new experience. .........
And thanks to everyone for the feedback. It is encouraging. I know it is a poison, but it's good to hear it. It helps.

Joya.....I was excited to see you decide to take the new experience option. I have never drank ever so I don't really know what it's like to go to a wedding and experience it with wine but I can tell you that your still going to have a GREAT time.....I've never been to a wedding that hasn't been anything but a lovely experience....enjoy your new experience!!!!

Here's my two cents:
I do occasionally have a glass or two of organic wine, and I enjoy it. HOWEVER: I would advise you to go to this wedding "dry," as it were, for several reasons. 1. You'll be surprised how much fun you'll have without the wine (drunk people are hilarious!) 2. Any amount of alcohol wakes the ravenous beast of cooked food cravings, and you'll have an easier time staying raw without the added temptation 3. I've found that alcohol doesn't have the same effect on me now that I'm raw. I usually get a little "down" the day after. Turns out it really is a depressant! 4. Raw is all about new experiences, and I agree with others on here who have suggested that you try this new experience.
Either way you go, stay committed to raw and have a great time!!

For me even a little bit of something (cooked, or alcohol) prompts me to overdue and it is harder to get back on the right path of RAW. For me, I wouldn't test the waters. Whatever you decide have fun! :)

LOL
I used to run around telling people I was a CareBear. haha. Now THAT would be interesting. ;)
I'm actually starting to get more excited about being "dry". I hung with friends this past weekend, and wasn't even tempted to join them in splitting a bottle of wine. But still had a blast. (of course, we were at one of the best raw food restaurants in NYC, so I was a little preoccupied with all the goodness!)
Thanks all for your input on this.

If you really want to do it, as long as you know it will stop at one drink. but be warned and have plenty of raw food on hand, everytime i have drank red wine, i get HUGE cravings for cooked food. I want to eventually give it up all together because i end up binging and i really dont enjoy the effects as much as i use to. raw chocolate,he shou wu,maca, all the superfoods are more effective, you get the effects of alcohol/drugs but it is good for you and you dont get any nasty side effects. i would make some raw chocolate to take with you!
Also be warned that when you are raw you get drunk ALOT more faster and with a tiny amount but also sober up alot faster, i use to feel 'tipsy' having three/four glasses of red wine, i now drink one and i feel the same effects!
I personally enjoy being the "sober one" lately. :-) It's actually pretty fun, having all your wits about you while everyone else is losing theirs!
