Hello,

I am not completely raw yet but I have great interest in the life style.

I am currently trying to cut out junkfood snaking and finding healthy alternatives.

Right now I am currently craving something salty. I love those baked chips that are on the market now. What would you reccommend to satisfy these cravings?

I do own a dehydrator so I can make anything that requires that.

Thanks. :)

there are SO many options ...zuchini chips (slice the up and deydrate) , sliced sunchokes ,cucumber slices ,flax crackers ,yam chips (slice REALLY thin ,mandoline or peeler works best ,and dehydrate- you can "search" for "chips" by clicking the banana above

also dulse and torn nori work well too!

Wow! Thanks for the quick responses!

I guess I should have thought about this before I had those cravings because my mouth is watering right now. :) I have been truely amazed at how great these raw alternatives are (I've been lurking for awhile) :)

Another alternative is dulse! It's salty AND crunchy!

Dulse is seaweed. Good tasting AND good for ya. It's considered a sea veggie.

Ahhh. Good to know.

Where do you guys typically do most of your shopping? I know the groccery store near my house has a very poor produce selection.

We are moving to a 1/2 acre house (in Banning...about 25 miles from Palm Springs since I know some of you are from CA) in a couple of months so I plan on starting my own garden complete with fruit trees soon.

Do you go to farmers markerts or do you pick all this up from your local health food store?

Personnally, we go to the farmers' markets first, then to Whole Foods. Around here, we can pretty much go to a market any day of the week.

Is there a Whole Foods or Wild Oats in Banning?

When we were looking for a place to live a few months ago, the requirements were ~ HAVE to have a Whole Foods AND a Trader Joe's in close proximity. We've got the best of all worlds now. :)

Is there a Whole Foods or Wild Oats in Banning?Oh my, Ms. R., I'm going to have to give you a lesson on Riverside County ... and the paucity of healthy resources out there.

Yikes, CaptainSwab, you certainly are in a challenging area! Well, there's a Trader Joe's in Riverside. In Palm Springs, there's a delightful little health food store where I had a salad in their cafe a few weeks ago when I was there for a film noir film festival. They actually have a raw section in the store -- cookies, crackers, etc. I've no doubt they have sea vegetables, though I don't know if they're raw. If you're interested, I can give you the name of that health food store (don't have it on me at the moment).

I also go to farmers' markets. I have a lousy Wild Oats near me, in Long Beach, which is next to useless, but there is a small chain of stores called Mother's in Orange County. There is also a raw food retail store in Huntington Beach, and the two local raw restaurants also sell raw products: agave, carob, nuts, seeds, coconut.

The cravings are tough when you're not prepared. For the salty crunchies, I keep on hand pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds that have been soaked/sprouted, tossed in a Nama Shoyu mixture, and dehydrated.

Eating raw does require advance planning, but, after a while, it comes naturally to have a bowl of nuts or seeds soaking, sprouting, or in the fridge. I usually also have on my counter or in my cupboards a canister of grawnola, one of flax crackers, a container of dehydrated nuts and seeds, and, in my fridge, onion bread or pizza bread. If you get in this habit as well, you're pretty well prepared for those cravings ... and for everyday eating!

Oh! Did I fail to mention the sweet cravings? Well -- dates, fudge balls, cookies. Yum!

Hehe. I've yet to find a good health food store since moving back here.

I grew up in riverside, went to college in Santa Barbara (where I went veg, it was a great place to do that) and then graduate school in Irvine. I actually used to shop at Mothers all the time when I lived in Orange County.

I'm moving to Banning because I teach there. Our house is only going to be 3 miles from the school I teach at so I am excited about being able to ride my bike to work. My husband works in Palm Springs so I would love to know the name of that place you are speaking of.

There are no Whole Foods or Wild Oats around here unfortuently.

There is a Trader Joes about 8 miles from where we currently rent but in Banning I think the closest one will be in Redlands.

Beamont (right next to banning) is growing like a week right now so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they open a TJ's there.

Y'all are really funny - but since I live in Maryland - this is greek to me. Welcome Captain Swab - chips, I think Vegan Vixen covered it - and many of us eat onion bread - search the banana above - it does something to the mind that is just awesome.

Welcome - we are a quirky bunch here with lots of love - Ms. R and Ms R.T.- :D

I keep yam chips (NOT sweet potato) and crackers on hand at all times. I slice the yam thinly, sprinkle with sea salt that I grind in the coffee grinder, and spray with coconut oil. They're not as crunchy as chips, but everything has a different taste and texture than commercial. The crackers dehydrate well and are very tasty.

Sweet potato's are yams ,yam is an american term for sweet potato's......

yam

yam [ yam ] (plural yams)

noun

1. plants food
Same as sweet potato (sense 1) (sense 2)

2. root vegetable: a vine root that resembles a large white floury potato and is eaten cooked as a vegetable

3. tropical plant: a tropical plant that produces yams. Genus Dioscorea.

[Late 16th century. Via Portuguese inhame or Spanish iƱame < a W African language]

but there are MANY varieties ,so maybe yours is a particular type that the farmer calls so-and-so yam ?

Well, VV's information is correct in a way, because she says that they're considered the same in the U.S.

But we know from experience that there is a difference in texture, moistness, and color. So, they can't really be used interchangeably.

So here's a little more complete lowdown on the two from a couple of sources:
