Coconut dillema

I usually buy coconut flakes from the local farmer's market as they do not sell whole coconuts. I finally found whole coconuts in my local supermarket. But when I cracked each of the three I bought open, none had water inside. They seemed pretty dried out and smelled bad:confused: . I didn't think coconut could actually go bad in the shell?

I live in NJ - it seems impossible to find coconuts here. Has anyone had any success buying them on-line?

Yes, young coconuts will go bad if they're not fresh and properly refrigerated. Try pressing the bottom of the coconut and if it feels soft and yields to pressure it's probably not good. I don't have an online source. They're expensive to buy online because they're heavy and cost a lot to ship.
