Wow, these look REALLY GOOD. I can't wait to experiment. I just bought a bunch of cucumbers for my green juices. I will have to use a couple to make a gorilla sandwhich. Never heard of them before. Yummy. :D

Because gorillas are raw vegan?

I'm going to email them and ask if they sell them in New York.

I would eat gorilla sandwiches everyday:D.

Because gorillas are raw vegan?

BINGO! We have a winner!!!!

What gorillas eat depends on what their habitat provides and on the time of the year. Mountain gorillas mainly feed on green plant parts, whereas lowland gorillas eat a lot of fruit. However, in the dry season only a few juicy fruits are available and so the animals have to eat more seeds and tree bark instead. Usually, fruits grow on trees; gorillas of all ages climb these trees to harvest them. Although western gorillas eat a higher percentage of fruit than of leaves, stems, pith and shoots, they still eat markedly less fruit than do chimpanzees and orangutans.

The food range of the western gorillas is very broad: they eat about 200 plant species. They particularly like plants belonging to the ginger and arrowroot families. In contrast, the mountain gorillas in the Virunga Volcanoes eat only 38 different plant species, mainly Galium, thistles, celery and nettles. An adult Grauer's gorilla male is estimated to eat 30 kg of plants every day, an adult female about 18 kg.

Apart from plants, they ingest soil occasionally. Perhaps this soil contains minerals that are missing in their plants, or the minerals neutralize poisonous substances in their food.

I'm a gorilla (at heart)!!!

Isn't that animal cruelty asking a gorilla to bench press 4000 lbs? That just doesn't seem kind...even if they can do it, I'm sure that's not a gorilla's number one priority...
*just being goofy here*

Yep Beckx, just hollow a cucumber with a knife. I ADORE these. I like to fill them with some of Alissa's mock tuna salad, sprouts, and raw olives. Amazing!

Wow! I just checked out that site - this is something I'm so-o having to try to make! Great solution for a picnic lunch, or anytime in fact! One could vary this in so many ways with various filling combos!

I think this gorilla sandwich has the possibility of crossing over (into cooked vegan/SAD territory). This morning I went shopping at my food co-op and there was hardly anyone in there. Monday mornings are the best. Anyway, I purchased 10 cucumbers because they're on sale. I told the really nice checker and bagger ladies I was going to make a gorilla sandwich and described it. Their eyes lit up and we all started talking about what you could put in it...sun dried tomatoes, basil, hummus, raw olives etc etc. By the time we were all finished, we were ready to make one! I know they're gonna try it and share it with friends. One of the women said she's an art student and she'll take them as snacks to school, instead of eating the junky food in the cafeteria. Hip Hip Hooray!

After drooling over the pictures on the web site for weeks and months now, I finally made one. And yes, the long handled tea spoon worked perfectly. I started off simple with just baby spinach/avocado/tomato/nuts/olives and some herbs and a little salt and it was yummy! Now I have the perfect thing to pack when we go on family outings that is filling and flavorful instead of munching on just fruits/veggies while everyone else eats SADwiches.

It was perfect, NOT messy at all and I didn't need a plate or anything!

Gorilla sandwiches sound ingenious. I'm definitely going to do some experimentation :D

Gourmet Vegan Cucumber sandwich

1 large (organic ) unpeeled cucumber
Sliced raw fresh fruits of choice ( mango, pineapple, bananas, apples, etc. etc. )
Dried fruit such as organic raisins, dates etc.
Sliced raw fresh vegetables of choice ( I.E. salad materials - avocado, onions, mushrooms, arugala, peppers, etc. etc. )
Chopped /sliced plain nuts of choice

I read about this on the Net and was fascinated. It really was quite tasty.

Whole Foods sells these sandwiches which were invented by a clever California man.

Called a Gorilla sandwich because a gorilla eats those healthy raw foods. The Gorilla of course is very strong too!!

Cut about 1/4 piece off of a washed and unpeeled cucumber. Hollow out both sections ( get rid of the pulp which contains a lot of water and would make the sandwich soggy ) of the cucumbers. Stuff ( layer ) your choices of combinations of raw fresh fruits, nuts, vegetables ( salad ingredients ) into the larger hollowed out cucumber . Invert the pointed end of the cut off piece of the smaller cucumber to fit into the partially filled cucumber to act as cover. Also stuff the hollowed out end piece cover if desired or use it as a container to place some olives , etc. in it. Wrap in plastic to seal both parts together . Chill well. Eat as a sandwich as is. Will last a day or two in the refrigerator.
